Just pay the extra and get a name brand one. Ive gone through like 3 CX chinese type turbos. Boost Lab is what I bought they run garret/precision type internals. Mine is purring like kitten compared to the others. You need real forged ball bearings on both ends.

Would you guys fully build and forge the 5vzfe with a manual and standalone and like 30psi to see what it can do or do the LS swap kit ftom CX?

Im inclined to keep it all Toyota.

I know a 2jz or ls is just easier to work with in terms of building up for big power. Depends on how much you are really dedicated to your motor.

A v8 for me would have been cheaper and easier, but I like the challenge just because only a small percentage have my setup.

LS would give you easier power and cheaper and an alu block LS would probably weigh less (but you'd be limited on how much power you could generate if you plan on running forced injection).

Unfortunately, the 5VZ is kind of a one trick pony. Everything about the engine screams low end power, hense the 5400RPM redline. While its a stout engine, its not a BEAMS engine and has some limitations. The oversquare design and cast iron block has lots of potential but to reach that potential you basically need to change out everything but the block. Stock crank and rods are cast and must be replaced. Cylinders are ok but at this point, they should be replaced. The top end will also need a ton of work as its all designed for that low end power. Intake porting, valve and cam work, as well as a new (custom made) intake manifold can really unlock the potential of this engine. Depending on how aggressive you are, you could get upwards of 7k RPM's from the overbore design. Either way, 30 PSI should net good power, but it'll take a ton of bottom and top end work to get the most out of the 5VZ.

I'm inclined to recommend the LS over rebuilding the 5VZ. LS is definitely one the best power plants on the market, reliable and cheap. If you get an alu block LS, you'd be limited on how much boost you'd be able to run (if you plan on running a turbo on the LS) but I'm pretty sure an alu LS weighs less than the cast iron 5VZ.

With all that said, if you want my recommendation, I'd recommend a 2JZ.

i think worrying about a LS block is a little overkill. they can easily handle 700hp which we all know would be overkill in one of our trucks. get an iron block LS and guarantee you wont have any worries.

i vote LS. tons of torque and power on tap and dont even have to worry about boost lag. throw a supercharger on it and youre up in the 700s and keep simplicity over a turbo. or do a turbp amd shoot for 1000+

I still have a 5.3 sitting for when this blows, so I may be impartial to an LS...

The alu blocks are ok but the iron block handles so much more boost.

13.7 is as low as my afr go when I'm in open loop. Is this rich enough at 5psi, full load? I thought I had a log going to see fuel trims and timing but I didn't.

When you guys tune, how do you determine what is a "safe afr"? I'm guessing there are a number of things to consider. Any great books you recommend?

I ordered a Walbro 190 fuel pump as I'm guessing that may be why it doesn't richen up more. Seems like most hit 12s in open loop.
