8” IFS Clamshell w/FRS Torsen

I asked @ZUK about that back in September. He said, "... the driver side stub shaft does not stay fully seated and leaks gear oil out." .

ECGS now offers a TrueTrac for 7.5 clamshell.

 

bwawuz02, have you had a chance to get loose in some snow / slush / icy conditions? How has she behaved? Have you had any issues on really slick stuff where all four wheels lost traction (i.e. spun) and the vehicle started sliding left?

 

I drove through some pretty deep slush in BC last month with zero issues, but was all at slow speeds @ Whistler. Tires on my truck are junk from the previous owner, too. I really didn't try to get loose in it though, and I grew up in snow so I'm sure I naturally adjusted to the conditions. No sliding at any point, and I don't have A-TRAC/VSC installed, yet.

 

So is the 2005 Tacoma is a 7.5 clamshell. i have always wanted a true track installed ,but Eaton never come threw i have a ARB like it but would like True Track better

 

I think the 2nd gens are 8".

Ensure to identify your generation correctly and it will dictate what's under it.

 

Is it possible to run the FJ AWD tcase with a taco front diff & cvs? Or do you have to swap all that out? The goal here being to convert my truck to AWD

I am going to run the ADD delete with the awd fj diff tube. Just curious what the easiest way to convert it to AWD would be?

 

Assuming that the input shaft of the FJ AWD tcase mates to the Tacoma 6-speed, you should just need the AWD FJ diff tube like you mentioned. The front diffs are the same for the Taco and FJ.

 

For your prerunner all yo need to do is swap in a 4th gen 4runner tcase and tranny. It will give you rwd, awd, 4x4, and 4low

 

Is it any different if converting a 4wd to AWD? and is that case you're talking about out of the limited w/ the v8 and AWD?

 

Yes, the taco tcase has a single shift motor. The t4r case has 2 shift motors, as well as, more limit switches. The tcase wound need to be out of the v6 model. The v8 tcase is full time awd/4x4.
The v6 tcase is the multi select aka 2wd/awd/4x4.

The v6 tcase will mate to your current tranny

I do apologize in advance for not doing my own research before asking the below question, but then again why re-research the wheel when others have already done it.

I have a line on a low-mileage FRS differential. I am re-gearing (already have Detroit TrueTrac in the rear) and for $450, it would be great to throw the FR-S one in at the same time.

The FJC carrier compared to the FRS diff at the beginning appears very compatible with minimal modification. Is the FJC carrier and differential case exactly the same as a base model SR-5 open diff?

Would going this route require wiring of sorts? Seems like that woild have to happen to get the t4r case to work properly. I am also trying to avoid as much wiring as possible with this swap.

Best case scenario would be to bolt it in, have manual shift locking center diff and full time awd like with the fj with the 40/60 power split while unlocked

 

Yea it’s gonna take a fair bit of wiring. You’ll have to wire the 4wd switch and locker switch. As well as the harness from the ecu to the tcase.

Also if you haven’t thought of it you’ll need to modify the tranny crossmember. The tranny mount is different size between the 2wd and 4wd

You're 100% sure on that? So can that means I can take a 86-2004 front diff and put it into a 2005, 2nd gen tacoma? But only the 2005? Would this also not work with a 2003 t4r?

I'm pretty sure you're wrong, but I've also been wrong before.

 

I ended up buying the FR-S diff... reading a bit more it looks like drilling out the ring bolt holes and mild clearancing of the housing is all it takes.

Does anyone know what size I need to drill the holes out to?

As long as the gearing is correct and the mounting points are the same yes. I would consult some specs to make sure the spline count on your pinion and the 05 clam shell pinion are correct as well. If not you will have to purchase a new yoke to fit the 05 pinion spline count. I own a 05 so yeah I am very sure.
