3rd Gen Poll: Rear End Noise howling when feathering throttle

The dealer is wanting the FTS to drive other new Tacoma’s from their lot and compare to mine. I am going to try to do it with him. I know we can find some quiet new ones. However, I know they’ll say that some take a few miles to howl. And that will be that. No winning when they say any howl scenario is normal lol

 

It seems that each differential has a unique 'personality'. Not good.

Turns out my howl is also tied to temp. When it's really cold out the noise disappears, soon as it warms up it comes right back. I bought the truck in Dec so that explains why it didn't show up for several months after owning it.

 

I wonder if it's due to the rear diff oil being thicker in cold temperatures. Why would less noise be transmitted when its cold?
My truck is perfectly quiet below 40- 45 degrees.

 

Doubtful. Even thicker 85w-140 oil makes no difference to the sound. No change at all.

 

I am part of the group where the colder it gets the quieter it gets. I don’t want winter to end! Ha

 

Why mask the problem when it shouldn't be one people???

Anyhow, I don't think Toyota wants to fix this issue or has engineers bright enough to understand the issue.. I owned 2 2019's at this point. Bought an sr5 4x4 double cab short bed from the dealer with 9 miles on it and within a week noticed a driveline wobble when slowing down from 25-15mph. Right then i knew something with driveshaft wasn't right..i went back instantly and brought my concerns up to the sales guys, and naturally they didn't give 2 fu*ks.. So i lost it on the entire place. They settled on getting me into a trd sport 4x4 double cab short bed with upgraded options for 2k more.. Ok no problem, i test drove that truck and it was fine, no wobble,or noises in the drive train with 45 miles on it..
Well What do you know 187 miles on the odometer and there is a whine noise from the rear when decelerating from 60-50 mph and the wobble at 25-15 mph appeared. Took it in and they blamed the factory running boards that came installed factory (lmao) wind noise and the vinyl bed cover for the rear noise... Jokers right? (Or lazy incompetent mechanics). Anyway I'm 2 receipts short of a lemon law claim since these jokers don't want to resolve the problem.. Let's see where this goes..
I was gonna do the whole shim speal and even the 3 degree pinion shims on my own since I am a fabricator and mechanic (currently built a 68 c10 with a 2jz) to see if this resolves the issue, but let's face it, i just spent 38k on a brand new truck, why that fu*k am i touching it? Ok rant over, thanks for anyone that read this entire post.

 

That's weird, mine is a little louder in the cold, also when going downhill.

 

Wow two strikes for you. Mine has it but was fixed by the tsb. Can’t tell if it returned because shortly after the tsb I upgraded my tires to duratrac . Looks and drives great. Howling won’t be a concern anymore due to tire noise . At least I’m enjoying my truck and not stressed out anymore. It looks good that I sometimes have to do a double look walking away on the parking lot lol.

You have the long bed, are you double cab as well? Trying to see if the driveline is the same. Also which tsb was it fixed under and what did it entail?

 

Yup DCLB 4wd trd off road. The tsb for the drive live vibration fixed it. They just replaced the body mount and applied some dampeners. I was one of those who had it done early in the tsb.

 

Mine definitely is louder off throttle when going down hill. But this winter it is much much quieter. That happened once the temps dropped into the 20-40 range. Only thing changed is the temperature so I assume that was the cause ha a couple more months and I’ll know for sure if it was temp related or not.

 

My rear diff noise was noticeable during the summer as well. The temperature did not have much of an affect on it as I can recall.

 

Is there a TSB for the 4wd system? When in 2wd it's fine but once in 4wd I can here a howl up front like from the front transfer case. This happens at 25mph. I switch back to 2wd thens its gone

 

Darn it, bought mine in Jan 19th and was thinking I was one of the lucky ones.. recently as temperature started warming up, at the same time as I changed rear diff oil (SuperTech 75w90 full synthetic) it started howling between 45-55 mph, usually off or light throttle. Was thinking it's the SuperTech oil but after reading this thread, maybe temperature related? Argh!

 

For me I think it is directly related to temps. Its been 20-40's for the past few months here and my howl is much more quiet. It is supposed to warm up the week after the next so I am sure it will be back in full force.

 

I might suggest it's peripherally related to temps, not directly.

 

Do you have the TSB number? Would it apply to a 2019 OR DCLB? Having this issue at only 1000 mi.
