    Toyota did get flamed for it, and it was certainly a lack of feature that the Colorado/Canyon pounced on. Realistically in an unloaded pickup there is so little weight over the rear end that the fronts do a heavy majority of the braking, but even so rear discs would help some, especially when towing or with a load in the rear. With a rear disc setup you usually need an auxiliary drum brake for the cable actuated parking brake, making it more expensive to produce since you are putting 2 sets of brakes on the rear. It was likely nothing more than a cost savings move. And since Toyota dominates the mid-size market, cheaping out on the rear brakes doesn’t really hurt their sales as people will buy the trucks anyway.

    You may have addressed this and I missed it but it is my understanding that all friction materials are require to have a DOT rating marked on their sides using two letters indicating their coefficient of friction (cF) for cold and hot performance. Just curious as to what the TRD performance pads show and whether they have a higher cF (cold or hot or both) than the regular factory pads?

    If pads were required to stamp the cF on the side that is news to me. I did not look to compare any side markings, so I cannot say. But I’ll defin look next change out.

    My old Range Rover Classic has a drum brake on the output of the transfer case for the parking brake. Every other vehicle I’ve owned with rear discs has just had a standard cable actuated parking brake utilizing the normal rear brakes. I don’t think that’s an excuse Toyota can use, they’re just doing as few changes and development as possible to maximize profits.

    There are some disc brake conversions, but they also need the master cylinder to be replaced with a larger unit. Many conversions will also not support a parking brake. If you replace the master cylinder on the later model Off Road/Pro trucks, you lose ATRAC.

    Stock. There are no performance drum/shoe products I am aware of for the Tacoma. So staying OEM is best for best quality.
