airing down questions

I've read a lot about airing down and want to be prepared to do it next time I go off road. I'm looking for a suggestion on what I should get gear wise (compressor, gauges, deflator...). Is something like this

kit all I would need? Also I'm running the stock goodyear wrangler kevlar tires and I'm not sure what is a safe pressure to air down to.

I have that kit and I love it. Super solid set up. ARB also makes a portable kit that comes in a box if you don't want to bolt it in your truck.

As far as airing down, I took mine wheeling (with stock tires) and I think I aired down to 15 psi. Felt ok, I liked it.

I'd say start at 20 - 24 psi and see how you like it. That's what I did and went down from there.

viair 88p works well if you keep it cool to inflate, and to deflate you can use a tire gauge. If you want to spend$$ some coyote deflators will work.

 

That kit is great. The deflator that is included in that kit makes airing down much more enjoyable. ARB makes top quality products. I typically air down to 12 PSI and a kit like this will make your life much easier.

Heard good things about this. I'm going back and forth between on board air and this.

 

I don’t have the same compressor but I do use the air up and air down kits.

I’ve aired the stock tires down to about 12 and that’s about the extent of my comfort level.

How much you air down really depends on the terrain you are doing and how you are driving.

Don’t be afraid to throw a bead. It happens, just throw your spare on.

That kit is really good. If you want something a little more starter, the

$103 Viair 88p Portable Compressor Kit (12V, 120 Psi, Forup to 33" Tires)

Viair 88p is a really good portable compressor that hooks to your battery, and that will save you on the on board ARB compressor and air hose kit.

Whatever compressor you get, definitely get the ARB deflator, a lot of people skimp on the deflating stuff, and it's a huge pain to spend 5+ minutes airing down one tire when you want to get going. The ARB deflator captures and removes the stem core, rather than just depressing it, which allows for much faster air evacuation.

 

and remember most compressors draw enough power to keep your engine running while using them.

 

As others have said, that’s a very high quality kit, nothing wrong with that.
You could save probably 50% and go with 3 essentials.
- Viair compressor or other inflator with battery cables (I have a smittybuilt, works fine for my 33” tires)
- A tire deflator that pulles the valve stem core out
- a simple accurate press on gauge for checking pressures when airing back up (defators are a bit time consuming)

Probably get all three for about $150 with good quality items.

 

Like everyone said, that kit is top notch. Buy once, cry once right.

That said, I have used a set of Trailhead deflators ($55) (screw them on and forget about them..they stop at their set PSI) and a $45 MV50 compressor for about 6 years now. No problems at all. Total that is about $100 in gear.

 

Okay based off what everyone is saying I think I am going to save my self some money and go with a cheaper setup.

 

I wouldn’t bother with automatic deflators. I used the ARB deflator and my buddy used a car key and a digital tire gauge and he was about 5 seconds slower than mine. My point being we have small tires so by he time you screw it on and move to next tire it will be done. Save your money on a better compressor. My buddy has harbor freight compressor and it takes him about 15 min to air up. It takes me about 45 sec a tire. I have dual ARB. Once I add the air tank I assume it will be a smidge faster.

If I were to do it again I might mess with the idea of getting two VIAR compressors and run them to a small tank. If you look at dual ARB it’s literally two singles put together.

 

Is there anything wrong with just using the tire pressure cap to deflate the tire

 

As great as that kit is its not portable so you have to be willing to bolt that in etc.

The tire deflator is great to have . Can get a cheaper portable compressor that will work fine.

I don't believe anyone who says just pressing the stem is as fast as a core capturing deflator. I have wheeled with tons of guys who just use an inflator with a button, or a key, or whatever they have to deflate, and often I'm done the whole truck when they're just moving on to tire #2.

 

I have a cheaper knock-off tire deflator, and it seems to be of reasonable quality ($20-$30). I've used the ARB and it was nice, too. To be honest, most of time I just use the button on the side of my pressure gauge. The deflator is more of a nice-to-have thing.

The compressor is way more important. Get a beefy one. I have a Viair (440p) and I like it, but everyone has a favorite brand. Just get one that pushes a lot of air.

 

100% that. After using a deflator like that there is nothing else.

When I had regular wheels I’d usually go down to 15. No issues ever.

 

I've been eying this indeflate thing, but I don't buy that it is at all worth the hefty price tag.
