Getting a midsize dog in the back seat area of an xtra-cab

I have a midsize dog, about 50lbs and I am wondering how hard it is for them to get into the rear seat area of an xtra-cab? How far forward does the seat slide to allow access? Do you think it’s enough room?
I am hoping to get a 1st gen this summer and would like to do an xtra-cab, loved the others I have owned, but it’s been a while. I can easily build a nice platform for the dog to lay down and see out, but can’t remember how easy rear access is.

    Thanks

My 140 pound Newfie gets in all the time. Sometimes I have to help him, depends how tired/motivated he is. I didn’t make a platform but I stuff the low areas with a couple moving blankets so he has something level to sit on.

My 50 lb setter gets in just fine. Folding the seat forward and letting him in that way is kind of tight. It's easier for him to get in the front seat and then go between the seats to get in the back. I would avoid getting one with the split bench seats for that reason. On the other hand, with the split bench seats it would be easier to keep him in the back once you got him in there. Plenty of room back there. Heck I've had two back there and still had plenty of room.

My two labs ride back there often. Most of the time one of them jumps up in the seats then goes between the seats into the back, only cause the front seat is hers , but they don’t have any issues.

I do have new sliders on my truck so I’m going to have to figure out how to get them in without getting tangled up in those now.

My 60 lb lab owns the back of my truck, I removed the jump seats and built a platform with leafs for each side that fold up so it’s pretty much dedicated storage under the platform and her bed above.

She’s still pretty spry but I have some concerns as she gets older of her getting in and out and being 4”-5” over stock with lift and tires doesn’t help.

Like tntacomaguy mentioned above I worry about her feet slipping through the slider, but it hasn’t been an issue for the last 7 years.

I saw a pic on here the other day of someone who had a medium sized dog in the ext cab but it was a hammock type. Not sure how it was set up though.

Can he drive? I’m thinking designated driver duties in a pinch

25D25E74-F7A4-43AD-8816-1CA7015DD467.jpg I built a platform, she jumps up into the seat and walks across the console. I have two bungee cords stretched very tightly across the back with the chain attached, I attach that to her halter. Besides the ‘seatbelt’ safety thing, it keeps her back there. I keep towels to wipe her feet if she’s really dirty, but it has been there for years, regular cleaning works to keep it and the seats clean. Still have the space under it for storage. It is also makes it very easy to haul other stuff, groceries, etc.

Until the hip issue + acl issue my 60lb would jump in with the seat forward. Now I hoist her up like I would do for my elderly dog. She leans on the sub and sometimes puts her paw up.

Nice looking dog! Is it a flat coat retriever? I just lost mine last fall. Best dog I've ever had.

I dont let my 60 pound lab mix in my truck, as her hair would be everywhere, and it took long enough to get the smoke odor out that the PO left me, dont need any dog smells to replace it with. But she does fit in the back of my dads 92 pickup fine which has a back seat thats a bit smaller than my 04.

I've been thinking about rear seat solutions similar to this.

I currently have a 10" sub in a wedge box behind the driver seat. I'd like to build a box/platform combo in front of the rear seat platform so my 75lb Shepherd and 40lb aussie mutts have some comfort without having to give up the passenger seat to one of them.

Its super easy to make, something there. I just used 1/2” plywood and 2x4. The. Bought some foam and cloth from a fabric store so it had some comfort. I use to sleep on it during my lunch breaks at my last job lmao
