You need to let your insurance company be your guide, ask lots of questions, then make your decision.

Frankly, the quality of a dealer body shop can be excellent. Or not. Just like everything else they do.

It's not impossible for an independent shop and the dealer to work together too. Some smaller dealers happily outsource complex body repairs.

That’s a lot of bricks. Way more bricks than a hood can handle. No doubt there is some damage taken by engine components as well. It’s not enough bricks to hurt the frame though, remember the truck is suspended and these things do go off road at high speed.

If you had dropped those in the bed, would it have hurt the frame?

Totaled probably not. Like someone else said if it jacked your engine mounts then that’s a huge ordeal. Your truck is probably going to have a salvage title now because of the damage though. I.e. no more full coverage and only liability from now on...Hopefully you plan on keeping it. Engine damage now your looking at salvage title no doubt. Your insurance will likely pay out what you owe, but I’m no expert.

Salvage titles and totaled go together...if it’s not totaled, then he won’t have a salvage title.

I don’t see it being totaled based off what the pictures show, but it’s hard to know. A hood, front fender, grille, and even a new engine are probably less than $12k or so together. If there’s more damage than we can see, then who knows.

What I’m talking about is will it end up in the scrap yard, when I say it wouldn’t be totaled. I think that’s what OP is asking? Insurance companies love to salvage Tacoma’s sure he can get it fixed but the question is will insurance deem it worth fixin.

What insurance company loves to salvage Tacomas? And what are you even talking about?

Only way you would know is if it was measured. I doubt it needs a frame.

I can absolutely say that it's not even close to having an insurance company total it. Maybe 8 K tops for repairs, that leaves a LOT of room financially before totaling. I doubt the engine bay has more then a K worth of damage, likely limited to hoses and maybe a valve cover unless it got into the the brake booster and system up top. That will jump the price up but still not close to totaling it out, you'd have to get over 18-20 K before they will do that.

It will be fine even if engine is messed up. When your vehicle is new you would have to have a lot of damage for the insurance company to total. If damage is more than 65-70% of total value depending on your insurance company then that's when they would total it. When you call your insurance company ask if they have a preferred body shop that will help get it back to you quicker.

Ha that’s condescending, I literally said it’s probably not totaled. Also it depends on what kind of insurance he has and what level of coverage. Regardless the truck is definetly worth repairing that I’m sure of.

How many bricks y’all think that is? ~50? At say 3lbs thats 150 lbs.
I didn’t search long or hard so I couldn’t find a Tacoma video, but I’ve settled on a vehicle that doesn’t even HAVE a real frame.

I know, I know. The bed is in the back of a truck and the hood is at the front of a truck. But let’s be reasonable...the Tacoma weighs what it weighs and can handle off road for the entirety of its life. Yet the frame doesn’t collapse instantly when you drive off a curb. If that many bricks can damage a frame, do not ever pull out of your driveway.

I have had knots in my stomach since this happened overnight, and slept maybe an hour. I appreciate the inputs from all of you!

I tried opening the hood. Without a crowbar it's not moving.

Once this shit ice melts I will get more pics.

I was trying to figure out what you meant by insurance companies salvaging Tacomas? If a car is repairable its not totaled nor would would it have a salvage title. I am an adjuster and just trying to wrap my head around to what you are saying.
