    Hey Taco community -

First off - I’m stoked on joining the tacoma family later this year. I’m a big car guy and have had mostly track rats my whole life (currently daily an E46 M3 incase anyones part of the mforums as well). I’ve been eyeing a tacoma for some time now and am ready to pull the trigger for the 2020.

This will be my first time buying a new car and I need some help.

Being a car guy, I have OCD on what I want and what I don’t. That said, I am wondering the best way to build a 2020 tacoma trd pro to my specs.

I know they just released the 2020 about a month ago and it won’t be on the lot until fall/winer, but I’m sure the process is similar for previous years.

How do you get a dealer to build you a Taco to your liking?

    Thanks,
    Victor

Edit: this thread was meant to buy on the car buying process more than trd pro vs off road. Also - I’ve driven plenty of tacomas and yes I understand that it won’t drive like the m3 hah! Nice meeting you all

You are basically going to be selecting one of the few available colors, Manual or Automatic, and if you want that silly Snorkel or not.

Go the the stealership, tell them what you want and if Toyota makes the combo of options you want, once toyota builds it, the dealer will allocate it or do a dealer trade if another dealer has it. Toyota won't specifically build a vehicle just for you, it's just when Toyota just happens to build the combo you want is when you get it

It’s more of just finding one you want. A limited number of Pros are allocated to dealerships and I’m almost positive you can’t just build one to your liking. If the demand is high you won’t have much room to be picky

Don't let the dealer build anything for you. If you are a car guy you can save a lot of money by customizing yourself. If you are looking at a Pro, just get it as is, because anything else is bolt on anyway.
Also, you don't order a custom order from Toyota. Look at the online brochure for the Tacoma and it will show what trims come with certain things stock and what option packages are available. Read up around here and do your homework, and if you are set on a Pro look out for the dealer added "Market Adjustment" fee.

There are no custom orders on any trim with Toyota.

Welcome. Test drive (a lot) and remember to check your expectations at the “truck” door. I’m stoked you’re stoked.

I say to make sure that you really do need a Pro. I can promise you this... There will be a very very very very limited opportunity to negotiate on the 2020 Pro when it first comes out.

That being said it is already more expensive than some of the perfectly capable models such as the Off Road and Sport. Just do your research and test drive the models now. They aren’t changing anything powertrain wise so the drivability will not change at all. All changes are stuff like lights and power seat type stuff.

Honestly with the step ups the offroad got this year, youre spot on. I’m more interested in the buying process not the trim. I can think through that myself

I belive as a fact anything a pro can climb over/drive through, an OR can do the exact same way. Their capabilities in that respect are identical.

If you are a car guy, why the truck?? Driving this truck will be nothing like driving your car, don't expect it to, or you'll be back on here saying it is gutless, etc. etc. Go test drive the truck first to make sure you like it.

Others have covered the custom build aspect of your question. You really don't have many options if looking at the pro.

And I’ll add- minus a locker, my SR will climb/drive through the exact same way.

Not much on the 07 yet. 18 is gone, but was a greata truck. TRD Pro grill, Gator FX3, Homelink mirror, Black out badges & exhaust tip, Remote start. Future TRD exhaust, skid plate.
Cool, you gonna go manual or auto?
Like they say, there really aren't many option choices on the Pro, so it will just be you finding the color & transmission you like, other than that snorkle. I ended up driving 10 hours to get the Tacoma I wanted since they were never in stock nearby the way I wanted them.

I had an E46 M3 for a few years, really fun car.

    Cheers!

so you plan to do some wheeling with the truck? Save some money, and look at the off road. You can add better parts than the pro for less money after you get the truck to help off road.

Nice man! I’m still torn on gearbox... my e46 is a 6 speed and traffic is a pain so that makes me want auto. But then again theres no control like driving a 6 speed which could be nice offroad. Here’s mine
