Does anyone know if there’s an update yet or at all for the 2018 Tacoma for CarPlay?

Do you folks think there will ever be an update to the 3rd Gen Tacoma’s?

    Thanks!

Nothing currently. I was told it will be a software update for 16-19 trucks based on the conversation the GM of local dealer had with their Toyota regional guy. They said winter 2019 it should become available.

I’ll believe it when I see it, but hopefully it’s actually coming.

There will be people that will trade just to get this, I don’t see us ever getting it on our 16-19 models without paying for a new head unit. Hope I’m wronge but I never even used it on my 17 Silverado.

Based on the pictures of the 2020, it appears to be a different radio.

This is the first I’ve heard that there would be a firmware update for ‘16-‘19.

    For it to happen;

    A) Current head unit would have to have the HP to run CarPlay (I have no idea if it does).

    B) Toyota would have to write (pay for) the code in the existing head unit.

    C) Toyota would have to count the beans on Apple royalty vs upgrade costs and make a decision.

Personally, I’d pay $100 for a firmware upgrade but that’s pribably about the limit.

    Apple Car Play Carplay
I did a little research with Toyota and on line as follows:
System 2017 Tacoma Ltd - JBL with Nav system - great sound - lack apple car play sofware. using iphone 6s
Upgraded radio firmware - Entune 3.0; copy file to blank 2mg USB thumb drive, transfer USB from CPU to truck, under options menu
https://www.toyota.com/entune/support/entune-faq/ not much changed there.......... better raw connectivity to the iphone.
Firmware upgrade did not address apple car play - bummer.

Short of buying a new player head unit or $475 adapter; just ordered this USB plug adapter for about $50 thru Amzn (my price range for this effort).
I will report back after it comes in a few days... hopefully it works as advertised.
Hanbaili Link Dongle Auto Link Dongle Universal USB White Smart Navigation Player Smart Link Apple CarPlay

Just arrived today straight from China.
It's a BUST............ did not work.
Could not get the communication file (SKU905199apk....APK) to upload to the radio software. Let me know if anyone else got this to work. Or a workaround like an APP straight hrough the iPhone app store.

Just checking. On your 2017 Limited with JBL, you updated the firmware from Entune 2 to Entune 3 with no other changes?

I saw nothing about that on the Entune site that you linked, but there is this place:
    https://securedp.toyota.com/download-app/getHeadUnits

Did you apply an Entune 3 firmware from there? I did the September 2017 firmware update on my Non-JBL head unit using the info from there.

    Thanks!

Except the difference is this is only a software change. Toyota has already shown they can add and remove apps from entune. CarPlay and android auto are nothing more than an app that runs on the head unit.

There’s a difference between software and major engineering changes…

Red flag went up right away when your post stated “I was told”. My fault for blatantly missing “GM”. However, it was stated by someone who works on these headunits here:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/2020-tacoma-teased.590296/page-80#post-19804493

    And:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/2020-tacoma-teased.590296/page-80#post-19804611

I would be surprised if a GM of a dealership knows more than an engineer who worked on the project.

I agree with all of this. I was told my truck would have remote start with the Entune 3.0. I knew it didn't before I bought it because I had the same Tacoma previously. The dealers don't know squat about their own cars their trying to sell. Either contact Toyota or ultimately just wait and see. My opinion though is that it's not happening in the 16-19 years.

This is also incorrect. It isn't as simple as a software update. Apple sets minimum hardware requirements for manufacturers to implement CarPlay (whether or not the current head-unit meets these requirements is unknown). Not sure about Android Auto.

I bought a nice Kenwood for $500 with the radio controls. Any value on stock radio? Could make it fairly affordable if there is a residual value

Rumor has it the stock head units are crazy expensive from OEM.
