Shit bolted onto other shit, and junk.
Inside the tank, just a sock. Some install an external filter in line.

Don't need to change it, it's really not a serviceable item. Basically just a strainer on the fuel pump. More work to get to it then its worth.

if you are going to go through the trouble of replacing the sock on the fuel pickup inside the tank, then you might as well replace the fuel pump while you're at it, pump comes complete with a new sock. My fuel pump lasted about 250k before it started not working too well (fuel pressure was really low)

My 2000 Taco had a fuel filter that was reasonably easy to change (I even purchased a set of flare nut wrenches for it, lol), not sure why they decided to hide it on the second gens. Is there a good spot to install an aftermarket filter? I haven't really looked.

    There is misinformation in here.

The sock is pre pump. The filter is post pump. They are both in the fuel bowl. The pump plug into the fuel filter.

This is more than most will ever want to do, but even the URD supplied external fuel filter is located near in proximity. That kit as well, removes the factory fuel filter and pump.

Direct drop in replacements can be found on Rock Auto, much cheaper than factory.

Or an upgrade pump kit can be installed for a potentially cheaper price. More labor intensive though.

3 micron filtration. Keeps injectors happy. 20 second fuel filter change.

    About $300 for everything.
