New exhaust. Better mpg?

i got a new exhaust installed, and I was shocked to see an increase in MPG. I didn’t think was actually possible.

My current tank mpg is 21.1 (no picture), with half city and half highway. I have a MT m with combined epa of 17mpg.

The exhaust has way too much highway drone, so I am going to have to get rid of this muffler.

I feel like there has been a change in power as well. I didn’t have to downshift when going up a mountain. Of course it’s butt dyno, so take that for what it is. I wasn’t expecting any increase in MPG or power.

 

Not to put a damper on your enthusiasm, but I find it hard to believe that simply changing your exhaust would give you a nearly 43% improvement in mpg. Depending on where you live, it could simply be weather related. Only time will tell when you track it.

 

That's because it's not true. It's like feeling better after a haircut or. It's all in your mind.
You also know using that instant mpg or even a tank full is bs. Gotta have many data points.

 

The Placebo effect is real. But... I have had three tanks already and each had higher MPG than normal.

Ovtune described the engine as having an overly restrictive exhaust system, which affects the engine’s performance according the Matt. I think he is the current expert on this engine outside of Toyota. Otherwise, if it wasn’t for Ovtune , I wouldn’t believe it was possible for a new exhaust system to make any difference.

 

Install this in front of your muffler and it will cut down the drone considerably. Note that it is a spiral louvered design and you want it installed so that the exhaust flows "into" the louvers not "over" this will also give you back some of the back pressure you lost with the Flowmaster knock off muffler you installed. Most local exhaust shops should have something like it in stock

Here is one installed on mine with the URD Y pipe cat delete system and Flowmaster dual outlet cat back.

 

See my post,the URD cat delete Y pipe really freed up some top end power but I lost bottom end and gained drone. See my solution that seems to have balanced those out.

It’s a black widow knockoff, which the shop makes themselves. they are a black widow vendor, but black widow never has any parts in stock.

They have flowmaster knockoffs but I didn’t want that.

Probably a comparable design to a flowmaster that actually creates a negative back pressure,good for higher rpm power but you loose on the low end. You need "some" back pressure if you want to retain low end torque

 

Do track you mpgs over time (see my sig)?

 

Oof they think a lot of that. I did the short shift kit, and I think theyre running a serious mark up.

I see numbers like that from my truck too with a stock exhaust.

Got mbrp 3 in cat back. No change what so ever, was actually worried bout losing low end since its 3 in rather than stock 2.5. But it is after cats so....

 

Normal highway trip today, and I got 22MPG whereas usually I get around 19 because of the uphill portion. I went 65MPM to 70MPH the entire way.

 

I have never seen those type of numbers without going downhill.

 

I don't see how you can say this with such certainty? I can't speak about the OP, but I PROMISE you that gaining MPG is not uncommon with a less restrictive exhaust for some vehicles (albeit mainly turbocharged).

When we get back to summer fuel it's not unusual for me to see 21 or 22 per tankfull of just general driving, but I can see 25 or 26 on the per trip like you posted too.
