We literally call fish and game, staties and town clerks yearly to ensure access is still open. So I find a lot of these comments previous to this funny. It's already happened here because of the blindness to the matter. Couldn't warn them then, apparently can't warn these guys now .

All I’m trying to say is that people are blaming the guy but who do we know he did it and not some rando along for the ride?

Oh I totally see the different viewpoint. That’s why it was suggested to watch it.

I’m not going to pretend that my sport doesn’t screw up rocks, explode parts, etc. Are you serious?

What you didn’t see is me jumping out of my Jeep, spray painting on that large rock “3rd gen Tacoma’s suck”. What purpose does that serve other than being a douche?

    Question for TCMBST:

Did you scrub the graffiti off the limestone?

As a rock climber for many years we have had to do a lot to correct for past rock face transgressions, drilling, chalk stains, etc., and for centuries man has been painting, carving and altering rock face. The era of of the snowflake has made many things taboo, and you just happen to be the next recipient of this outcry as if you killed a bald eagle, cut down the last tree dwelling of the red cockaded woodpecker or clubbed a baby harbor seal. Your "crime" is graffiti, so you should be threatened with death? Of course those threatening death can't bring themselves to "kill" a porterhouse steak. You didn't rape a child, burn a cross on a church lawn or any other assorted hate crimes that rightfully deserve to be stamped out, but you are prosecuted on the liberal stage that allows hate to be directed at you. The Interweb is a great way to not face the persons accused and be the bully. There is no level of perspective anymore so people just trash those they perceive to be guilty in the eyes of the media. The MAGA kid v. CNN is our legacy now. But I digress. TCMBST, please have your idiot camera guy clean the rock face, apologize to the Navajo Nation and perform some public service to reduce vehicular impact on our National Parks. And that should be the penance that ends this bullshit.

You don’t seem to grasp the concept of preservation. As others have pointed out, damage on trails is different. Authority have set aside trails so we humans can enjoy our hobbies while still preserving nature because obviously the world doesn’t operate in black and white like how you’re framing it. Trails allows us to control and mitigate damage to the overall environment, and also without it, we’d have a lot more of these Matteos ruining shit for everyone.

Even so... then the photo should NOT have been plastered across their Instagram account. The owner should have said, "NOT cool" and no publicity. Instead, the pic is posted for all of the company's followers to see.

The company and brand owner, Mateo, has reportedly said he did not do it, but he "takes full responsibility." It seems reasonable, then, to believe that the posting of the picture was done with his knowledge, and probably blessing -- if not outright direction. His response to this whole affair is more consistent, IMO, with someone getting caught with hand in the cookie jar, rather than understanding that what was done was wrong in the first place. FWIW.

I have seen other posts here and there, that state that Mateo was actually the one that made the inscription. I do not know if this is true or not. I expect that if he did do it, then that fact will eventually come out. But if he did do it, then blamed others, then finally fesses up to it... it only gets worse for him.

But wait, one of his dude's ratted him out. Then he took full responsibility and said he blames it on the other guy when he went off to take a crap. His friend used mud to paint the rock and record it for his instagram. When he came back it was too late, he already made it part of his story. But they both say not to worry, the acid rain gunna wash it off real soon. He is the #metoo victim

What purpose does intentionally picking lines that cause you to slam rocks, burn out on rocks, etc. serve? Your boundaries of acceptable use seem to line up perfectly with your own enjoyment.

My point is that you can burn this guy at the stake while burning out up to the top of your holier than thou rock throne, or you can do something constructive. This thread is not constructive and it's mostly a "my shit doesn't stink" circle jerk.

People like to play the victim to mitigate the amount of hate they’re getting. It’s a low hanging fruit.

I won’t lie. I’ve been the asshole before. I’ve seen locks cut to gates and called in the forest service or sheriff. Nothing more poetic than seeing about 20-30 “wheelers” coming off a closed trail to meet an officer ready to hand out tickets. I have no tolerance for it.

Call of what they will, more and more the only open off pavement options are becoming limited to forest service roads and dispersed camping. Yet they wonder why.

I was in Washington and wheeled Reiter Pit before it was closed and then reopened as a shadow of its former self. It’s depressing to see what can happen with irresponsible use.

Unfollowed the guy first off, secondly I've be sure to never buy anything from him. That's about all I care to do. I'm sure he's gotten plenty of messages about what he's done so I don't see the point in adding to the pile of DMs he's already got. It's also not this guy's first time out, I actually met the guy when he did a ride along on a trail with me and some of my buddies, the guy has been exposed to leave no trace and decided his buddy's graffiti was OK enough to put it on social media. If he had any confusion on how people feel about graffiti in the back country I'm pretty sure he's got the picture now.

The final point is, my actions are within the Forest Service guidelines, his was not. You don’t see the forest service looking for my ass.....and they come out and watch us like hawks.

Not to get all Kum Ba Yah, but I love it when we take care of each other, doesn't mater what you enjoy. I've stopped and talked/helped countless hikers and Mt bikers. Met a guy last summer doing a through hike on the PCT, offered him some water and we swapped stories for a half hour or so. Nice guy from Alabama.
