This is true in states/companies that use the ISO Form H003 Homeowners Special Form. It's pretty common in the industry. Vehicles are generally excluded with exception for those that are not licensed for use on public roads and are intended for servicing the residence premises. The idea is that there will be no overlap of coverage so that a person can't "double dip" - get paid twice for something like this happening, once from Auto and once from Homeowners.

In answer to your second question: if someone is responsible for the damage (say, a roofer that damaged the chimney a week before) the auto insurance company will pay out to fix the car first, then try to recover what they paid from the responsible party. That's called "Subrogation ". It happens all of the time. However, if it's just an old chimney and a strong wind blew it over, the Auto policy will just pay up and call it a day. That's what they are for, is to cover the truck for Comprehensive damage like this if/when it happens.

If nothing was fixed on the chimney recently from a contractor most likely will be purely auto. Homeowner did not know chimney would fall or you if you are the homeowner. Same reason if a tree fell on your car at your house. That's the unpredictable and there for the homeowner could not be held liable unless you had previously notified them of the potential of that.

Actually you as a homeowner are expected to keep your residence in a safe condition. Chimneys, like many parts of your home need inspection and periodic upkeep.
This is no different than letting your sidewalks get broken up and falling apart. I have yet to see a unbreakable house!

This. Same goes for a tree. If Homeowner knew about a dead and rotted tree prior to a windstorm that knocked it down and damaged your truck, that's Liability on the homeowner. The homeowner has a duty to maintain his / her property.

That's great, you can prove that it was undamaged as of Friday.

Pretty much how I understand it. Don't know the terms, or the ins and outs, but if auto gets damaged by anything, the auto policy pays then tries to collect from the responsible party. If the responsible party has liability insurance (homeowners policy), then that will pay the original auto insurance claim.
Then, both the insurance companies raise rates on both parties. Everyone wins!

You are dead on . But I would never take a vehicle to a insurance preferred shop . I would call and make sure a reputable shop that does quality work isn't part of the insurance carriers network . As toytacos stated it will be faster but the real problem is with a DRP (direct repair program) they are under contractually limited time constraints and a lot of times are under contract to use aftermarket or used parts as much as possible to keep the cost down for the carrier. A drp is a real good way to get a lot of damage overlooked or glossed over . If it were me I would call a dealership and find one close that has a bodyshop and no drps and have it go for the motor first .
Bottom line is dont trust the company paying for it to take it to a shop in there best interest. They dont give two squats over you and half the time they try and deny obvious stuff that's part of it and the drp shop is just trying to get it out as fast as they can so they dont have to pay your rental.

You honestly could not be more wrong in your assumption of a DRP shop. I can say some insurance companies are more prone to it but not all.

No offense but I've worked in collision for 31 years in shops from Georgia to California and am only sharing information I've personally seen from inside. Do you work for an insurance company? I personally will never work for another drp shop if I can help it . I currently work for a non drp dealership for over the last 6 years . The only reason a shop signs up for a drp is to "sell there soul " for work to be steered into there shop and have to cut big deals and sign contracts to do things a certain way to get that workload. The collision techs and painters are then working harder for less and required to certain techniques like "burning in " clearcoat along roof rails . A burn in for example always fails or shows its ugly head within a year or two . Or like I said use inferior parts. All to save the insurance company money so they make more profit.

I'm only trying to help you guys not to fall into they're repair trap .Would you rather here it from CNN instead

This is from the stop drp website a non profit trying to raise awareness to what the insurance companies are getting away with.

I am an adjuster for a premium company who does nothing like you are saying "they all do" at our DRP shops. You clearly did not read the entire 2 sentences of my post. Not ALL cut corners and "sell their soul" like you say. A blanket statement like that is pretty misleading.
