For the battery to die that quick, you might have something thats drawing power when its not on... i understand it wasnt new, but it wasnt dying either

First thing I did was to check to see if I left anything on. I did not see anything. Drove it yesterday just fine.

Would an alternator go out after 40,000 miles? I guess I'll find out. If I can't start it after work thats a pretty good indication that the alernator didn't charge it on my morning commute.

Alternators are sometimes bad right out of the box. But before spending loot check your fuse box. I had a similar issue and it turned out that “ignition #2” fuse had blown.

Just checked every single fuse using a multi-meter and everything checked OK

So I just called Toyota service and they said if there isn't a "check charging system" light on the dash then theres nothing wrong with the altenator. so I guess I'm gonna go buy a LAPS battery.

So ran over to Autozone and bought a Duralast Gold. I guess we'll see what happens over the next couple days. If its truly a charging issue. Do you think I'll see problems by Wednesday? If I do I'm probably going to have to abort the trip.

EDIT: Also bought a set of jumper cables...

Water can foul an alternator too, even if it's "good".

Of course Toyota would say "well if the light isn't on then it's fine" regardless of the problem. :frusty:

I mean I just asked his opinion over the phone. My real question to him was if the alternator is covered under the powertrain warranty. That's when he was like "its probably the battery"

So I found this old battery tester. It's basically a volt meter with a bunch of resistance so you can put a load on the battery and watch to see if the alternator kicks. So I hit the switch and i can see the battery instantly drop down to 12.2 volts and then as the alternator kicks in it comes back up to 13.4v. So i know my alternator is working. The question still remains if its putting out enough to keep the battery charged.

EDIT: It would be interesting to perform this test on another 3rd gen to see if the results are similar. Any volunteers that can come over before wednesday?

Throwing stuff at the wall, but could it be a parasitic drain from an accessory? Some time I drive through stuff that makes me cringe a bit worried that I’ll screw some wiring up or something.

I thought about that too and I appreciate the idea. Since I created my RTMR, ALL my accessories and aftermarket switches now go through that RTMR box. I tripped the breaker on it and hooked up my multi-meter on either side of the breaker to determine if any amperage was going to the box and it never even wiggled off 0. So I don't think that thing is pulling power, either way I'm going to leave it tripped until I need it.
