Ok, so I have a 2018 TRD Pro Tacoma with about 5700km on it. I have been maintaining the wheels properly. Yep, have taken it out many times on dirt and gravel roads. Never got any Damage. I dont go on hardcore wheeling trips...mainly use the truck as a daily and for family camping trips.

This past weekend I was excited to get bigger tires (265/75r16).

Knowing that these black wheels have a glossy/mirror finish, I asked the shop to be careful as they easily scratched.

Well.... got the truck back with all 4 wheels damaged. I now have hairline scratches in the finish in sections on all 4 wheel...1-2 inches from the edge, plus 2 deep scratches from mishandling. One paint scratch/chip where the valve stem is...which clearly proves damage from the air compressor nosel.

I am pissed and they pushing back, still in negotiations. I did take pictures of all the wheels before I handed in the keys showing that the wheels were in new condition without any of the new damage.

    Questions

    1) Does anyone know if the hair line scratches on the trd pro wheel
    can be easily buffed out?

    2) For the smaller deeper scratches, can the touchup repair a section or does the whole wheel have to be refinished or replaced

I get that the scratches are not catastrophic but it just comes down the shop not taking the care when replacing the tires. The damage is definitely not from the touchless machine but when the wheels were miss handled from the staff. Stacking dirty tires on them or placing them on a gritty surface face down etc.

Bloody waste of time. The wheels should have come back to me in the same condition. The truck is so new!!!

Attached of some of the damage but not all.

I find it odd that a reputable tire shop would cause damage like that.

One way to tell if they will buff out. if you get the area wet, and scratches disappear with being wet. They will buff out. If not, they will need to be refinished.

I get that they’re wheels and will eventually get some scratches. But yes, I’d be pissed. Shouldn’t happen. Good luck OP.

If those wheels scuff that easily from just placing a tire on top of them I'd get new wheels.

Don't bother talking to techs . Talk to the manager.
If they're going to be dicks about it , you can take it to small claims court. The court will issue a certified letter of your complaint. Every state is different so you'll need to check.

I agree, its careless and OP should get reimbursement for it. But I'm also stating the fact that if those pro wheels get scuffs just from having a tire set ontop of them there are real issues coming from Toyota. He may only have 5700 Km on the truck now but if the paint on those wheels are that shitty. How do you think its gonna look in 30K?

Sorry for your pains I feel you. When I had my tires changed out a month back I told the local Discount Tire to be very careful or they would be buying me brand new ones. When the guy went out to get the mileage I said let's look at these wheels and you let me know if you see anything wrong with them?

Luckily the store manager was the one I talked to and he made it well known to go slow and careful. It took them like 2 hours to do it but I was more happy waiting and not having to deal with the headache. Hindsight's always 20/20 but if that were me I wouldn't have left without thoroughly checking out those wheels. What sucks is if you leave out and don't say anything and try to come back then they can easily say well it was fine when it left here.

I have pro rims waiting in the garage until I can find a reputable tire installer for this exact reason. I have been waiting for so long...

On my 09 I had FJ TRD SE Anthracite rims installed at the dealership and they scratched up the rims. I knew refinishing would never be the same and buffed the scratches out myself. The metallic finish on mine also helped with hiding any scratches I could not buff out. I got about 95 percent of them cleared out and the last 5 percent was another reminder to not get service done at the dealer.

Thanks. Talking to store owner. He is a good guy and is a known big tire store and local.... this situation just sucks for everyone. He is going through his video survalence today of the shop to see how the wheels where handled on Saturday. I am glad I took pics just before the service.

I agree, careless. The strange thing about the these wheels... I have gotten them dirty...real dirty on camping trips... eveytime I cleaned them and maintained properly, no scratches or damages occurred.

I remember reading a post of someone having 35k or so on the same wheels and still looking new. I guess it comes down to how a person cleans them and where/how you drive them.

I would have the shop find a good reputable wheel shop to fix your issue. On the other hand, the paint on those wheels would have me concern too if they scratch that easily.

How I've seen some guys change tires is like this.
They rush. Blow off the lugs with air tools ( how you got the nicks), not careful how they lay the wheels as in front side down and drag as they lift off the ground ( scratches). Look at all the scratches on the wheels. They're straight line.

Mine got a little scratched when I put my 265/75/16 Duratrac's. Best part is, since I Plasti-dipped my rims, it was easy adding another squirt of Plasti-dip and it's good as new. :crapstorm:

That's super careless. I have the same wheels, went through the same process by explaining to be careful. The manager grabbed his best installer. They came back perfect. I've had wheels before be completely ruined and it sucks.

I've got the same ones. I've had tires installed and screws removed, never had damage of any kind. That's a terrible installer. To make matters worse, he explained that he wanted them to be careful.

I had mine done at the Toyota Dealer and had the same talk with the SA, they did a great job, not a single scratch or scuff!
