    More than likely, yes. Even defacing something on private property is a crime (if it's not your property).

    It's more of a question of the type and severity of the crime, vs. whether it's actually illegal or not.

    "Federal law makes it a federal Class A misdemeanor to “willfully deface, disturb, remove or destroy any personal property, or structures, or any scientific, cultural, archaeological or historic resource, natural object or area” on public lands."
