Am looking into acquiring a 1/2" cordless impact driver. (18v or higher) I am already semi-invested in Bosch 18v tools. Bosch has an 18v 1/2" impact driver that is spec'd @ 500 ft-lbs. Should that do... or is it worth getting a Milwaukee or Dewalt that may go as high as 700-800ft-lb (and maybe up to "1200ft-lb" breakaway torque) and buy into a new battery system as well?

 

Whats your intended use? Be very very careful of those things. They will get you in a world of hurt in a hurry.

 

PB Blaster good enough? (I've seen some comparisons to Kroil that suggest Kroil is not worth the extra expen$se.)

Or is that homebrew 50-50 ATF/Acetone mixture really the magic elixir several web pages and forum discussions make it out to be? Are there any downsides to an ATF/Aceotone nut sauce? Like dissolves any and all rubber? Or makes you go blind? Or will corrode all metal within 6 months?

Intended use is to break loose old, rusted / corroded bolts that haven't been touched since the dawn of time, well... since Fremont birthed my truck.

For tightening shit... figured I'd either use a speed ratchet, or maybe a 1/4" driver, then torque to spec.

 

Thats the problem with a 1/2" impact that goes to 800ftlbs. You blow spec away by the time you touch the trigger. You can use a 3/8" impact that doesnt have nearly the max torque that will get you close more safely.

If you have bolts that need that much torque to break loose, then, um, well, you see, uh, so, good luck.

 

So, reading between your lines, it sounds like a 1/2" that does 500ft-lb is more than enough... and if it's not enough, then I have other issues (e.g. reach for the BFing breaker bar, or the oxyacetylene torch etc)?

Or are you saying 500ft-lb is still too much... and I should "be happy" with (I dunno) 250ft-lb or 180ft-lb?

If tightening sheeitt... I totally get using a tool that only goes up to 140ft-lbs or so. But if trying to get rusted suspension bolts off... why not hit it with the BFH to start with (i.e. the 500ft-lb impact driver)?

Or am I over-thinking this, and my inexperience is getting in the way... several days of PB Blastering and then use a big breaker bar?

Several days of fill-in-the-blank solvent and a breaker should do the trick on anything you need to break loose. Do I own a 1/2" impact? Yes. Is it always with me on the trails? Yes. Do I use it? Rarely. But, they are great tools to have available.

If you use discretion and understand the trouble it can get you in and use its power wisely, by all means, go get one and enjoy it. But be careful. Use it for loosening and loosening only. Make sure to get one with selectable power. That will keep you in the safe house most of the time.

 

Here’s a insurance question for you Colorado peeps. Original autobody shop estimated $4150 for repairs which I received a check from my insurance company. Took it to another autobody shop to get repaired but only the sheet metal work. Not the front bumper, wheels and running boards which were all in the original estimate. Ended up costing me $2800. The estimate that the shop is sending to insurance is for $4900. Insurance company will be sending them a check for the extra $750 which is for work they never did, so basically free money for doing nothing. Do I A) do nothing and let the shop keep the money for the repairs they didn’t do, B) call my insurance company and tell them what is going on or C) ????

 

C) drink a cold beer and wait on the people that know what they’re talking about to chime in.
