What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

I just replaced my inners and outers. At 85k. They were both fine. I hope to get another 80k and I’ll replace the whole rack next time around

 

I need to do this. How difficult was it to get to the cab bolts?

 

I have 205k on my steering rack and TREs are still fine. I just have some leaking and noise because the filter is probably all clogged up in the reservoir.

 

Did you notice a difference when driving ?

 

Sold the old transmission too... More chachkys for the truck incoming

 

I haven’t taken on the road yet. I have some other stuff I’m doing to the truck. Should be on the road tomorrow.

 

haha they work GREAT offroad, the only time it is on on a regular road is a back road with no one else nearby

I plan on counting the number of turns when removing the outer ones. is there anything I have to do special on the inner tie rods.

 

don't take your first corner as hard as you normally would with that thing up there now. Makes a big difference. Why I lowered mine.

 

With that motor sitting low it just gives you more room for a top mount intercooler

 

pfff might as well do a blower if you wanna just heat soak an intercooler.

 

We were joking about grafting a wrx scoop on mine. Never really understood why you'd put an air intercooler on top of the motor.

 

well if you do a 4runner on it looks cool haha

Simple, space requirements and ease and above all else..cost.

does help a bit if you have it scooped like the subarus do and you keep moving. But not nearly as good as a FMIC.

 

Or is it. Does the shear and tensile strength of a stainless grade 8 match a galvanized or mild steel.... lol



Every bolt can be different, using a skidmore I have tested way to many same grade some lots are way bad some are where they should be. Darwin likes to hide around the corner.

Centerline to Centerline. IE, the center of the part of the rod end that goes into the knuckle, etc. Nothing else matters except that length.

Merely counting the number of turns isn't guaranteed to get you close. Some manufacturers threaded shaft sections are longer than others. You'd be surprised.

You DO realize Grade 8 bolts can be had in galvanized, right?
There are bad lots of bolts, and bad vendors out there, sure. But a Grade 8 bolt *that meets spec* is a grade 8 bolt. If it's stronger, it's something else. Likewise, weaker.

This is assuming we aren't talking aircraft bolts (hey, guess what- not grade 8), exotic materials, etc.

I have found Lowe's to be a good source of miscellaneous fasteners when I don't need bulk quantities. If I do, boltdepot.com. If I need them drilled for safety wire, drilledheadbolts.com.

 

That's nice and all, but I can't be bothered on my 5" phone screen.
