New exhaust. Better mpg?

This was one from a few days ago, not bad for winter fuel and a cold day.

 

If the drone is too much and you want to keep flowmaster...look into installing a helmholz resonator.

 

Anyone can achieve MPGs such as those shown in this thread over short distances. The real MPGs will be derived by taking total miles driven/gallons to fill the tank and do that over time. Anything else is just pure misinformation.

 

With nothing to much to do with the "cat back" section. Crawl under your truck and look at the crossover pipe that the factory crushes almost flat for clearance purposes, then look up stream towards the engine the whole Y-pipe is bungled with an extra set of catalytic converters.

Look at URD's Y-pipe .... a cat back might help a bit if it is a larger diameter with a free flow muffler, but the front half of the exhaust on these trucks is the choke point

 

Its plausible. It’s odd that some stock 3g gets 16 mpg and others 20. Maybe something happened when the pipes opened up. We all know how individualistic these trucks are.

 

Yeah, I saw that nasty crush pipe when the shop put the truck on the lift. Is it for ground clearance? I also saw the 4 Cats.

I just filled up and my previous tank had a 21MPG tank average. I have never had a tank average that high.

Everyone nit-picked every little detail of my results. I am not going to track all my tanks again just so people can nit-pick and say everything I did was meaningless.

 

No factory exhaust is restrictive to the point of fuel economy being affected.

The pros to free flowing only get noticeable with performance and full throttle applications.

 

Sweet, yes when you make and air pump more efficient it runs better....

The advantage of the 3.5 is there are ways to get better mpg...
The 4.0 just eats gas no matter what you do....

 

Maybe I am driving more conservatively because the exhaust is louder. I don't know. I do know I am getting better fuel economy.

My last tank was 21MPG, and is was half/half HWY/CITY and stop-n-go traffic. This is a record tank Average for me.

When the Shop owner said he tested his mufflers, and they all let to better MPG. I thought it was straight BS, but i didn't care because his prices were so reasonable.

 

I track all my mpg’s also so I really appreciate you sharing. I’m considering exhaust work after levelling and plus sized tires. If I got 1mpg extra I would be happy

 

For some reason only on Tacoma World no engine mods ever help and are completely useless unless you add a supercharger....

I've yet to see anyone post the 500 miles that 27-28 mpg should have taken them for a tankful. Usually 25-75 miles accompany those higher average screen shots. I know its possible to go that far but just haven't seen high average over long distance in pics like that. My Dad's Prius hits 100 every time it coasts but lifetime average is less than half that so while the screen shots of a momentary consumption may be accurate mpg isn't useful as a momentary figure but only over long distances.

 

Does Matt from OVtune have an exhaust that he likes or recommends?

 

My three month average has risen to 20MPGs according to my computer, and I monitor my tanks every time I fill up. I definitely had an increase in MPG of about 1.

It's not worth all the noise though.

I bought a resonator, and while it significantly tamed the drone, it sounds like a Honda Ricer now. I do not like that sound. I am just going to go back to at least a three chamber muffler.


I have already spent 400 bucks on this, which could have gone to something more useful. Lesson learned.

1 mpg increase is not all that significant. My last three tanks are averaging about 1 mpg increase due to warmer weather and no longer using winter mix fuel.

 

I switch to a black widow muffler for about a month now. The Black Widow keeps a the low-end and remains quiet at freeway speeds. It's exactly how black widow claims.

However, My MPG has gone back down after removing the previous muffler. Also, I do feel a slight loss in power with the new muffler. I know it's butt dyno, but that's all I have.

 

After reading this entire feed, I am still curious because I installed the MBRP 3" cutback on my 2019 tacoma and I lost an average of 3 MPG and reading how many got an increase. I am looking at getting an OV tune as soon as I can, and also maybe the glass pack muffler to aid in the increase if feel economy in my truck. Maybe I missed some key notes here, but any one have suggestions? Maybe switch my exhaust for a new brand of cat back exhaust that maybe a little quieter and improve my mileage?

Without a fair bit of testing with the before and after setups, with better data than a couple runs and the dash trip info it'd be really hard to tell if there was a change in MPG
