Frame rust recall

I had my frame done last summer. I was in a loaner for 2 1/2 months, because my frame was about to crumble into dust and was not road-worthy - no way were they letting me keep it while waiting for the replacement. At least they gave me a brand-new Taco. Weird - too big and fancy for me. Didn't stop me from telling all my friends that it was my new truck!

 

I was happy to roll their loaners. I got to save a couple thousand miles of wear on mine. Better gas mileage for the most part, and I got to try several of their newer lines of vehicles. Sedan, SUV, and truck for an extended test drive. I admit I really like some of the electronic geegaws. I love radar assisted cruise control, heated seats, integrated blue tooth, and the power rear window on the new truck was awesome as is the bed light. I like the lines and stuff on the reverse camera though I can live without it.

Most of that stuff I can add to my truck if i really want it, barring the radar unless I get really creative. I hate the lane departure stuff and was glad I could turn that off.

I really hate the power delivery and shifting on the third gen. The driving feel is really odd. Maybe they did get more horse power out of the smaller motor but it feels like it's getting flogged pretty hard. The overall driving feel just isn't to my liking. Luckily the suspension felt fine because I'm putting third gen suspension stuff on my truck. I didn't really find anything much to complain of there, stiffer but also more connected so I'm okay with that. Wireless charger didn't work through my case very well.

Lighted 4wd switch is a good thing but having it look like another cabin temp control and on the same panel is really stupid placement. I put her in 4w hi doing around 65 on pavement one night trying to turn the heat up, whoops!

 

Looking for assistance. I have a 2004 Tacoma that is completely rusted underneath and will not pass inspection. I did receive a recall notice several years ago (maybe more) concerning the frame rust and was told by the dealership that the frame was fine and did not need replaced. Now I feel that I was mislead. The truck is in very good condition otherwise. So my question is... am I screwed or do I have any recourse.

 

If it had the CRC applied, the frame warranty should be extended to 15yrs from "in service" date IIRC. If nothing was done then you're screwed. I'm not too familiar with the 1st Gen rust warranty so you may still have sent recourse.

 

Thank you for your response... The CRC was applied in Nov 2010. i am assuming that the "in service date " is the date of purchase which was Nov 2003. So it looks like I missed the warranty extension. I am sick over this... i feel that the dealership should have replaced the frame but did not because they were overwhelmed with the warranty work that they were receiving. i have a truck that is otherwise in great condition sitting in my driveway worthless. Vehicles should last much longer than this. I have a 1968 Ford F250 that has been redone without any work whatsoever needed to the frame.

I will never buy another Toyota.

 

I dropped off my 2006 back in the beginning of November and I just got it back before this past weekend. I also had them put 5100’s on all 4, OME 885’s on front, Wheelers 3pack aal + overload, new front bearings, A/c compressor, steering linkage, and they got my rusted hitch insert out for me. It was there for over 3 months but I didn’t mind at all since they took care or rentals for me. In that time I mostly drove a 455hp 2019 Camaro 2SS and a 2019 Infiniti QX60. I’ll miss both of them to be honest.. Anyhow, so far so good on the post frame install and other work done. I don’t have a single complaint (yet),and I’m happy that I qualified to have it done !

 

Just for those in the Des Moines (Iowa) area, TJ at Toyota of Des Moines has been doing Tacoma frame replacements for well over a year now. So - when he does my Tacoma later this week, it will not be his first rodeo. Was surprised to hear "in the hundreds" when I asked them how many they have done so far. The frame bone pile confirms this.

 

Hey there - I have a 2007 Access Cab RWD 5 lug manual transmissiln Tacoma that has been at the Sanford, NC Toyota dealer for over 1 month. I’m very nervous for the call that my frame js ready. Hoping they won’t want $$$$ for parts that must be replaced and are not part ofthe recall.

Since I took the Tacoma into the dealership, I have read post after post on tacomaworld re suspension. Decided to have 4600s delivered to the dealer for their install. I won’t ever lift her or change the tire size, even after reading and seeing so many pics of better looking tacos.

I had a 2018 Rav 4 limited for 1 week and now a 2018 TRD Sport for 4+ weeks. The new tacoma is butt, in my opinion. Using the new radar cruise control, which you can toggle off, is like losing control of your ability to feed yourself. Being 10 feet off the ground and having to hop up into the truck reminds me that its all for show. Putting your foot to the floor puts the engine in such a frenzy that it almost loses its shorts. The computerized truck’s transmission won’t even follow my direction when placed into +/- mode.

Looking forward to getting back my low to the ground, non 4wd, 4 cylinder, non truck looking, good mpg vehicle back. Anyone who tells you that you need 4wd for anything other than off-roading is nuts. Let’s bring back the reliable 4 cylinder, manual transmission taco.

 

Welcome to TW, I had to pick up something in Northern Vermont and without my 4wd I wouldn't have made it on the backroads that weren't paved and very hilly, so your comment isn't valid in all area of the USA.

 

I live in the very flat part of the Midwest and yes you DO NEED 4WD on many occassions so ohh is obwrong.

 

I think obh is just trying to convince himself. I for one could not get into or out of my place here in central NH without 4WD for at least half the year.

 

ohh could be mathematically challenged. I have K&N intake, catback and still get 14mph in 4WD!

 

Jim, thanks for posting. I too will use this dealer but I have a few more years before my eligibility expires. I need to inspect my frame closely after the winter we have had. Make sure it's still usable .

 

Ah, you women just don't know how to properly drive a 2WD.

 

Try going up a 6-8mile hill in the mountains through a snow storm. Limited speed due to the scaredy cats in front of you. 2wd can take you most places but definitely has its limits- momentum is key!

 

For that matter, try going up a 1 mile hill in the mountains through a snowstorm on a Class 6 (not town maintained) Road to my house. All winter it's ice and snow. And then comes Mud Season. 2WD ain't gonna cut it, I don't care how skilled a driver you seem to think you are (not you DirtTaco - OP).

 

No offense, just my opinion. Sounds like cleats and sgage are looking for excuses to make justifying their gas guzzlers easier. As we all know, 4wd doesn’t help you stop any quicker, likely the added weight makes stopping distance longer.

Anyway, in the middle of a snow storm with 2 feet on the ground half way up a hill I’ll take watching my girl and her Mom hop in the truck bed, jump up and down while holding onto the beds sides to get us the rest of the way up the hill. Can’t beat that bonding experience, the result of a an engineers wet dream of a RWD with all the weight in the front.

 

My gas guzzler? My regular cab 4 cyl 2007 4wd Taco? You are really reaching here. Where do you live? Some of us live in the country, in rough country. It's not about stopping any quicker, it's about getting to where you need to go. You don't seem to know what you're talking about. That's OK.

 

Why you would buy a Tacoma which has shit mileage in all configurations and then worry about the tiny difference in 2wd and 4wd is beyond me

Anyways, I’ve had my truck at 3 dealers so far.

The one where I bought my truck was beyond useless. I had taken it in for a few recalls before and at the same time some very minor work I didn’t have equipment for and they were unfriendly and not helpful at all. Later on I went in for the rear leaf recall and they wanted me to jump a bunch of hoops to get it done. I asked them to look at the frame while it was there because I knew a big rust hole had formed by the cat on the driver side. They said the tech didn’t find anything

I called another dealer to get them to do the leaf springs and they didn’t ask for anything to get it done and even put the blocks back in for me. They looked at the frame and it was approved the same week for a frame swap. This was within a day of taking it between dealers. I guess the hole doubled in size over one day in the summer...

I got a contract which required moving provinces before the swap would be done. I took it to a dealer in my new town and again it was approved that day for a swap. Waited for the frame for about a month and then the swap was done while I was up at site for a week. They were really communicative and called to put some new parts on while every thing was disassembled. It was 10/10 service.

2/3 dealers did some awesome customer service. The first one was really frustrating to deal with and wasted lots of my time.

Sorry for the ramble but my point is if one dealer says no keep trying. It could be one shitty tech who doesn’t care or the dealer. Keep pushing until you find one who does.

 

My biggest $$ mistake was replacing my LCA's 2 months ago before the frame replacement this past week. New LCA's come with the new frame.
