The 2tr is wasted on a double cab with an automatic. It’s going to be the trans that dictates the drivability in this scenario.

Op of that post needs a car. In theory, everyone needs a “Home Depot” vehicle, but it’s not a need.

Very well said. I agree totally. The 4 cylinder with a STD tranny would be decent but with the automatic it is a joke.

It hurts to say but yeah- I cannot recommend a 4cyl after ‘17, unless a person completely drops all expectations.

AGREED! I love the Tacoma truck except for this 4 cylinder drive-train package. I drive mine like I stole it every time I get in. I turn on ECT and shove it to the floor, LOL.

I would say there is nothing wrong with the 4 cylinder quality wise. Like I said above, powerwise, it is an embarrassment to Toyota as far as I am concerned. But, like you said, just grab one off the lot, drive it and decide for yourself. "Power" can be a very relative term. I am trying my hardest to trade mine off but it is proving difficult being upside down. Some lessons in life can be very expensive.

Congrats on gettin in the 4Runner before TSS. Good call.

Your brother is right, the 2.7 is the better engine for tacomas, basing that on the notion that you don’t typically buy a Tacoma to tow or race. That being said, it’s built more stout and will probably last longer than the 3.4. Since 2018, they (2.7 tacomas) are all autos. You’re on the right track, take it for a weekend and feel it out, that’s more than enough time. If you don’t like the engine/trans combo, like you said, get a trailer. You already have a 4Runner, a car wouldn’t be out of the question as far as practicality goes.

    Hey guys,

I have a '18 sr in MGM, with the plastic black bumper. Anyone in the same camp with one of the TRD-faux grilles? want to get an idea for how it looks/installation with the TSS. Thanks!

Got the new wheels and tires on today. Defiantly changed the whole look of the truck. Didn’t notice any power difference as I went with a C Load tire.

The thing about the Taco 2.7 is that it's a global engine design. The Camry, RAV4 and Corolla's engines have had decades of refinement to American tastes and are paired with gear ratios that suit American driving styles.

The 2.7 was shoehorned under the hood to offer an inexpensive powertrain that works for trucks. Ironically, when you look at the applications of the 2.7 and the 3.5, the 2.7 is the actual truck motor (just not by American standards).

I've been riding the fence on buying a Tacoma for a few years and the debate between 2.7 and 3.5 is something I wrack my brain with myself.

I currently own a 2016 4 cylinder automatic double cab SR with 47K miles on it. At first I wasn't sure about the truck as it drove and shifted differently than my 2003 V6 Ranger. With time I have grown to really love the truck and it does well for me as a daily driver. It does much better on gas than the old Ranger did. I recently pulled a 5x10 cargo trailer completely packed with a 150 year old antique wooden furniture set from Central Florida up towards the North Carolina/South Carolina border all while driving in bad weather. The truck did an excellent job considering old furniture is heavy and made from real wood. There were no issues even at highway speeds.

Oh man that 2.7. It’s made in Japan. With forged internals. It is the biggest inline 4 in production at IIRC 95mm by 95mm stroke. Iron block, closed deck. Any leftover weaknesses, like a plastic cooling pipe, were ironed out last gen. The simplicity and stoutness of build mean this engine will last.

Love it. Been on there a long time now and holding up very well.

I only really use it to hold dog leashes in busy camp areas, quite overkill for that ... but it will eventually get a winch once it is no longer my daily driver.
