proud new owner here. Brought home a new 2019 trd sport last week! However, I have a few questions:

On a cold start, how long with the truck high idle before lowering to normal operation (Assuming normal SoCal weather of 55-70*)? And is it best practice to wait out the high idle to let the truck fully warm up before driving? I'm doing 90% freeway miles.

Next, I've noticed the truck will jump forward or backward when shifting between Park, Reverse, and Drive. I've never had a truck do this. Every other car I've had would shift smoothly into each gear and will not move until i take my foot off the brake. Do i need to have this checked out by Toyota?

    Welcome to TW!
Yes a trip to the dealer is probably in order. That's usually a sign of low transmission fluid.
    This is how it works.....
Call, make a appointment for the issue you are describing just as you did here.
Do not tell them the guys from TW told you.... blah, blah, blah.
You will not be taken seriously.
Its going to take a while as the truck will need to be left.
Pull up. Meet your service writer, describe your problem. They will need for the jump in reverse from p to d or d to r or p to r.
If it only does it at a certain time, let them know. It's not normal, so dont let them pull that crap. Again keep cool and dont mention TW. Either wait for the truck there or arrange for alternate transportation. Wait for call go pick it up and check everything out, anything they might have touched. Lugs, axle, rear hubs drive line... etc. Take truck home and put it through its paces to make sure it's not happening anymore. If it is, back you go.
I recommend going to cabe Toyota in long beach if you can get there
Hopefully they fix it the first time.
Sorry long post, but you asked:cheers:

As for the warm up period...as long as you can wait. Reason being is neither the engine nor the transmission like to operate smoothly until they both are at optimum temperature. At least that's been my experience.

Once the temp needle moves up from the bottom peg, you are good to go. I rarely wait that long but I don't drive away until the truck let me know it is okay... We have been together for a long time and are pretty close! I too am in SoCal, below 1000', so 50° is too damn cold for what we pay to live here!

Okay I'll buck the above advice on warm ups and say let it idle for 15-30 seconds and you're good to go (unless you don't care about MPG). Today's modern engines don't need an extended warm up period (unless your truck is parked outside and subjected to sub zero temperatures).

Do you park on a incline/hill or flat?
Do you set the parking brake before taking your foot off the gas pedal?

I park on flat ground and i do usually set the parking brake before taking my foot off the brake. What are your thoughts?

Update: went to Cabe Toyota and got the run around. I had the guy in my truck and replicated the shifting transition jolt and he kept talking in circles saying thats normal. I know its not... none of my friends with Tacoma's have this issue. The tech wouldnt look at it any further no matter what i said. I really think he didnt give a crap, even though the truck is 5 days old to me.

I ended up on the phone with Toyota Corporate who said I definitely should not be experiencing this problem and they opened a case for me. Next step, Cabe is supposed to contact me by Wednesday

That's the right path... all you can do is wait on Toyota.
Did you just go in or did you make a appointment.
If you just went in and said surprise I got this issue, yeah that's how the most run around start. They need a appointment to free up the proper tech or you get oil change guy looking at it and he most likely barely knows his ass from a hole in the ground.

I called and waited on hold with reception for 10min. Then when someone answered, they took my number and said they'd call me back in another 10-15 min. Thats fine, i get it. They're busy. But i waited an hour and a half without a call back so I drove over because its only 3 miles from my house.

I just would rather have heard "yes, thats a problem. Leave your car for the next few days to have it fixed." Rather than, "there's nothing wrong."

Understood. Most dealers are just fighting everything on these trucks. They are just as tired of fixing corporate mistakes from the factory and they just don't care when half of it can not be replicated on demand. Takes to much time to diagnose the real issues, so most of the time they just throw parts at it and :fingerscrossed:

Mine doesn't jump, as long as I have my foot on the brake pedal. And I can hear it throttling down when I put it in gear and the engine/trans are cold.

Is there a way for me to check the transmission fluid? I could not find this on the manual

The transmission cooler on the towing package needs some extra fluid. I read someplace that perhaps Tacos with the towing package are not being filled with enough transmission fluid from the factory to account for this. Not sure if this is true or not, but I'd like to check my fluid just in case.

    Nice pic!!

Mine was born down in Baja not that long ago, but soon after moved north, where it's being raised in snow and frozen roads. Either way, off-roading is in its DNA, and that's where it seems the happiest. BTW, your truck looks pretty happy on that pic :)
