Hello, I have a 2009 Tacoma TRD... was having trouble hearing vocals with the stock setup so set out to replace things in a sort of budget way.. here's what my new system is:

    Head Unit: Pioneer MVH-AV251BT https://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-AVH-...s=MVH-AV251BT&qid=1552414272&s=gateway&sr=8-1

    Front Tweeters: https://www.crutchfield.com/p_575R165S/Rockford-Fosgate-R165-S.html
I took JUST the tweeters out of the Rockford Fosgate Prime R165-S set. (was originally going to use the whole set, but those 6.5's in that set have absolutley no Lows.. so.....

Front door Lowers: Pioneer TS-G690 https://www.crutchfield.com/p_130TSG690/Pioneer-TS-G690.html

Rear door: Rockfor Fosgate R165X3 https://www.crutchfield.com/p_575R165X3/Rockford-Fosgate-R165X3.html

Problem is...IMO compared to stock this setup is much clearer, but also Much harsher on the ears... Is there some compatibility issue with the mix of speakers up front? Yes, I know having a 3way speaker with a tweeter has this tendency, but crutchfield told me I could tinker to get the sound the way I like it still :notsure:I've tried tinkering with the EQ settings... tried taping over the tweeters just for kicks...but idk.. it just feels like it's harder on my ears.. like less "full" or "rich" maybe... Maybe I need some resistors ooor something somewhere... oor start over lol idk... feel free to let me hear it as I'm not real sound smart just a humble mechanic.

The main issue here is that it looks like you picked the lowest priced speakers you could. Cheap speakers will sound cheap.

Your best bet is to save up and get nice front speakers. Expect to pay at least 150-200 for decent front component speakers.

3way will give you some of the extra highs combined with the tweet.

The other thing is that you are losing mids and lows with vibration of the doors. i would suggest some dynamat or noico on the doors around the speaker holes to help mitigate losses through the vibrations in the door.

you may also need some less sensitive speakers, or a sub.

    Too much.
You have a total of 10 tweeters in your truck. 10. That would blow mi tinnitus through the roof.

A balanced system would be more like tweeters, woofer driver in front and then coaxial in rear. I bet if you switch to the Fosgate 6.5 woofer driver in the front and take out the 6x9 3ways, it won't be as harsh......

Is there a way to "lessen" the volume of the tweeters? I feel like they add a nice sound when uncovered but there overpowering. I think I do have some sticky sound dampening mats around the shop that are for semi cabs so I could probably do that easy enough.

And yeah I tried the 6.5's up front and the bass in those is about the extent of hitting a tincan with a drum stick... but yeah I was hoping there was a way to adjust some of the high's out

unless you are running an "active" system (which you are not) there really is no way to lessen the volume to the tweeters. You have 10 tweeters in there. take out those 6x9s, and your ears will thank you,.....

wait a second. how long ago did you purchase everything?

How do you have the tweeters running? Do you have some sort of crossover?

everything was bought in the last two weeks. maybe I would prefer a 6x9 that's not a 3 way but I couldn't find any reasonably priced?... I have other uses for those 6x9's in our semi's we rebuild if I find something better..

those speakers have tweeters, I took my tweeters out when I changed all my door speakers cause it sounded off having like 97 tweeters going at once, sounds much better with the stand alone tweeters disconnected

"reasonable priced" does not mean Super High end, NOR introductory Barbie corvette speakers. a decent set can be had for 100-120 to be fair

through this I think the best sound I've had was with everything changed except I left the factory 6x9's in the front.. That sounded the most balanced, except those speakers were sounding a little distorted.

And This is something I'm intrested in.. how should they be hooked up?

I did a full speaker/HU/amps upgrade in my T4R and went completely away from stock setup. My tweeters are 3.5" 3 ways, my front doors are 8"mid bass speakers, rear doors are stock siz 6.5" component speakers, and I added another set of 3.5 3 ways in the back doors too. Every speaker is coming off a crossover which is coming off a 1600w amp. Also have a 600w amp pushing 1 10" in the back to balance the bass even more. As been mentioned you basically have 10 "highs" with that setup so I can only imagine the ringing in your ears. Chang up your speakers to have more mids and/or bass and drop your tweeter count to 2-4 max. Also, do your research....I am not using any stock speaker wire and and like I said every speaker I have is coming off an amp and its super clean and balanced. You can always spend even more money and buy a DSP to connect to your setup to customize you EQ even more.

    1. The OEM tweeters have a cut off capacitor that protects the tweeter from frequencies that are too low for it. Without the capacitor, you will get distorted sound. The set up that you purchased (I just reviewed the instruction manual), the tweeters might have a capacitor on them because I don't see a passive crossover box that they get wired to. Most tweeters in a component set don't come with the capacitor (some do, and some have them in-line)

It's OK, no biggy. If you want to keep those speakers and are just trying to find a way to kill the distortion, no worries. You're just going to have to figure out the right combination with what you have.

If not, you spent $144 on speakers. You have all the door adapters you need, I would just return them, and plug in the Kickers everyone seems to love on this site.

don't beat yourself up about it. I would return them and buy a decent pair at a time and build it over weeks if money is an issue. start with the best set of front doors you can buy (again, props to eh plug and play subaru tweeter idea). the rears are filler too be honest...
