    The soap IS the stabilizer. A soap molecule has both water-soluble and water-insoluble parts. The soap molecules form nano scale sperical structures in water called micelles. The water soluble parts are on the outside interface with water. The monomer is very water insoluble so it migrates into the soap micelle to get away from the water. The reaction is initiated and forms polymer.

    So you effectively have your reaction taking place in little soap bubbles.

    Skipped a lot of steps; just getting general idea across.

    Stage 2, I would have to tip my hand a little too much to talk about. I run another reaction to get block resistance, which is a big deal to have a vinyl emulsion with block resist.

    Let's say you have 1000 mL of latex at 50% solids by volume. The latex has a particle diameter of 100 nano meters. How many latex particles are in that litre of latex?
