yeah, I'd definitely recommend getting out of the habit of leaving things unlocked. you just never know.

 

Defending personal property quickly turns in to defending one's life if they don't obey my voice commands to leave. Just saying.

 

living at the end of the cul de sac and being having a few houses to pass that always have at least one car in the front yard, plus me having a car always at the house I've never had a person trip my camera in a year. Given it only takes once.

some thief may see you as an easier target because they'll think "Hm this guy thinks because he's at the end of a cul de sac and past a few houses that we won't come all the way to his place, this'll be easy"

 

make sure they pay you attention shooting in the back not allowed. Basically I could rob you blind as long as I keep my back turned to you and don’t have a weapon you’re in the wrong if you shoot me. You can detain me, just can’t shoot.

If they're a threat to me or my wife, they're dead. I don't care if your back is turned. For all I know, you're grabbing a weapon and plan to turn around and use it. Its all based on the situation at hand. Just saying "Don't shoot someone in the back" doesn't cut it for me. Too many variables. I'd rather be alive than be shot by some tweaker because I was thinking about something like that.

 

I believe that under bama law, if they are in your house by force you can shoot them from any direction, as long as you felt your life was in danger. make sure you get them before they get out the door. If they are in the yard, it's a different set of rules.

I'm not saying I wouldn't shoot, I'm saying it's very risky, but worth the risk.

As Justin said, make sure they can't crawl out of your house. If the guys stealing from your truck which is probably on your driveway or in your yard and your whole family is in the house you will without a doubt lose in court rather he's dead or alive to make it to court. A warning shot would be best bet.

 

For more reasons than I can even remember: never fire a warning shot. If you're not shooting for your life, you're doing it wrong.

 

Warning shot would put my neighbors at risk. Gotta have a solid target. I never pull the trigger unless I'm using it for its intended purpose. And, again, depending on the situation, if he doesn't leave when told to do so, he is now risking my life and on my property. I'd give them the chance to leave but only once. I do believe I'd win that in court.

 

I couldn't do a warning shot where I live now, but back in Clanton when I had a pasture with a house in the middle thieves really wouldn't come down a 1/4 mile driveway where I can see the whole way to the house.

I would sound my alarm first now if someone tripped my camera.

 

Even then don't do it. Firing a gun is deadly force no matter where you're aiming, so you're on the hook for that legally. They could return fire claiming you started shooting first and just missed, and legally kill you.

And that's not even considering ricochet and how much farther a bullet can go than you'd probably think.

 

to be honest no one knows who would win in court on these.

2 warnings for me, 1 is my alarm, 2 is me asking them once I've drawn on them.

 

We shoot at my house in Clanton all the time, it's on a hill with firing range in backyard. it's about where you shoot warning shot. I get what you're saying about the return fire though.
