Filter housing

Alright everyone, I have a question. So I ran into issues last summer looking for a filter housing. Yall helped me out, much appreciated. But I just cant get past the fact I'm finding 2 types of housings for my truck and no one can really answer as to why?

First picture is the one I needed, second is the one everyone tried to sell me. Not a big deal now, but I'd really like to know why there's 2 different types of housing/mass airflow sensors etc. Any ideas?

 

The top one is for the bullet style MAF, which I believe was only for 95-97 models. The bottom one is for the newer style MAF, which you probably have. Other than that, the air boxes are exactly the same.

 

Alright, mines a 98 and I have the bullet style. Had a rough go trying to find a replacement until fellow TW members pointed me in the right direction. But I just couldn't get over trying to figure out the difference, even when I search different years and models i find everything but the bullet style housing

 

You need to be careful lots of time internet catalogs just use random pictures .

I know the 98 had the Bulky MAF it is not hard to change to the newer style I think it was only one wire that needs moved

 

That's fair, I did purchase one of Amazon and of course it was the wrong one. Just seems strange that other then ones with a 400$ price tag I cant seem to find that style. Anyway is what it is, i was more curious then anything at this point.

 

$400 for just the box!?

anywhere I can just get some new clips that close the filter cover?.
22yrs of humidity has left them a bit weathered

 

Hmm interesting, it must have changed in 99 then, my buddy's 99 has the newer style MAF. Strange that they didn't do it when they did the facelift in 98.

It's pretty easy to change from one type of MAF to the other, or even use ones off of different cars (turbo guys use the big Supra MAF, @1997tacomav6 has a thread about swapping to a Volvo MAF from the bullet style I think). If you've already bought the new style box, you might look into that to save some time and money.

 

@200kAndCounting I did a quick http://car-part.com search near phoenix and saw around 20 listed. not sure if half of them are good or not but worth checking out if you need one? I used 1997 Tacoma V6 (2wd works too from my understanding)

 

I think they changed it in 98, but maybe during the year or after the run started? Most 98's have the newer style MAF setup from what I've seen

 

Yeah must be another weird Toyota thing.

 

the clips seem to be the weak point mine seem to always break tarp straps and gorilla tape can fix most things.

When I swapped Mine I just cut off the old style end going toward the throttle body and put the new style piece not sure just what I used a 2 part epoxy been a few years now.

 

Thanks everyone! It's just become one of those things where I've felt I needed a better answer. I'm sure there's 50+ topics I should be more concerned or interested in yet I chose to spend my days wondering about an air cleaner box. (Also I did check out car parts website) a handful I checked on were beat up and couldn't justify spending the money.
