I used to bait those little MFers, but now it’s trap only due to what others have said.

We have falcons, hawks, owls, and small scavengers that are all around.

Next up is some barn cats. Most likely will have a lot of them, the owls are populated in my area.

Be careful. They will just get sick and burrow into a tiny hole and die. Then you deal with the smell for a month.

Peppermint oil will deter them. I once had a problem with a little ba&$&@ living in the trunk of my car. I caught him on a glue trap. He would build a nest overnight in the corner of the trunk and I even saw him a few times. I need to check under the hood of my truck to make sure nothing has taken up residence in there.

That is actually why i use these specific bait chunks. They are identified for their low secondary toxicity and the next trophic level would need to eat 20 to 30 dead rodents to experience secondary poisoning. around my chickens and other animals, I use various traps and other methods but use this brand for those reasons.

I trapped them, live traps and relocated them, then re chickenwired the attic. My dogs were catching and eating them, didnt wnat them all to die. Once I repaired all the holes and put in the sonic repellers, they all moved to the neighbors' attics...

Pack rats got to my other last truck engine. I started noticing small rat shit on top of the hood a week before it was too late. Started to the truck up one night. Instantly ran like shit and check engine came on. Opened the hood and saw the rat for a second then it ran off. $2500 worth of wire damage/nest clearing on a truck with 15k miles on it. I keep a bright mechanic light under the truck all night now and haven’t had any issues since then but other people in the neighborhood leave their hoods open. I also keep traps everywhere around the front yard. Did some research and I guess they are attracted to the soy based wiring in these new vehicles.

Alaskan Malamute Fur and a plethora of mods... because ...
I sprayed under the truck with wax and other protectants. Not fluid film but just random chemicals / products for now.... Wiped down hoses and cables. It’s not perfect but I don’t like poisoning the food chain. Mice can eat poison and then get eaten by pets or something else.

This happened in my Lexus. Mother died, but not before she gave birth on top of my HVAC filter.

I have a buddy that lost his diesel truck from a pack rat nest. He didn’t look under the hood, started the motor and took off. Fire broke out under the hood and he couldn’t get it out in time. Total loss

That was an expensive ordeal all together.

@VirusCage I like your idea with hanging bait under the hood but went with the area denial method since I don't have an issue yet. I stuffed a couple dryer sheets in each pill bottle. I thought about putting some peppermint oil in there also but I want to make it won't spontaneously combust first. That would be a major step backwards. It took longer to round up the parts at menards than it did to make them.

back in the olden days, the fabric wrap on house wire was impregnated with arsenic to slow down the rodent damage. if you are ever ripping out abandoned wire, either use gloves & a mask or wash up really well after!

Good to know. The attic is all knob and tube, so it would be in that age range, but the attic cutout is 14.5 x 16 so I won't be up there anytime soon. Couldn't even get my shoulders through.

Just a heads up, as I see it being mentioned. The peppermint oil deterrent is a myth. The day before discovering the 1st nest in my cabin filter, I soaked cotton balls in pure peppermint extract, putting them in the glove box, as that was where the most inactivity was evident. It was the next day someone recommended checking the cabin filter, whereupon I found less than 24 hours later, the pepperment soaked cotton balls had been used as nesting material.
