Everyone's gonna be freaked out about a two feet worth of a mud hole now after seeing what John's truck did, but forreal.. if you have your intake and fenders unmolested OR you moved your intake out of the direct line of fire from your tires, it won't be a problem lol

What exactly did happen to his truck? He's not said anything, nor anyone else. I just assumed he got the filter a bit damp.

I got stuck in that hole 2 years back to back. Upset that I didn't get redemption this year, but I'll be there in 2020!

Well I'm sure you're aware of where the stock 2nd gen intake sits... so any cutting up of the fender liner is going to turn your intake into a drinking straw for water. Basically some water splashed up, his intake start sucking in water and his engine started making a god awful noise. Check engine light came on etc. He very smartly shut it down, took the air filter out and it was SOAKED. So we got to work on pulling the plugs. Air box was pulled and was holding about a liter of water. If John had continued to run his truck, he woulda locked the shit outta that motor. Thankfully he cut it off before all that water had made it from his airbox to the engine. Only one of the spark plugs was a little wet when we pulled them. There's a video of it in my google photo album. It's the one that's 1:29

    https://photos.app.goo.gl/L2iTT1vwP4DXhps56

We ended up yanking the intake tube out of the fender and tucking it into the engine bay while we were in there.

Yeah tucking it up into the engine bay helped keep water and mud out of my air intake. It's not perfect though, my filter was damp and there was a little mud/water in there, but not much. I'd honestly expect similar if I still had full flares and liners.

You would be pretty much correct, even my stock intake with uncut fender liners will get a tiny bit of water in the airbox. It rarely gets on the filter though (at least for 1st gen)

I can get it to play, using Chrome. Had to disable HTML5 autoplay blocker for the site. Not sure if you have a similar extension that may be blocking playback

Not sure if it matters but if I click the link on my phone, it takes me to the google photos app. Not sure what the behavior is with no app.

I'm saying not sure a lot

    That was quite the look!

At least John did the right thing and shut it down quickly. Good save!
I've gotten my filter damp a few times, and post-wheeling trips, discovered that I had gotten water inside the box too. Now that I've trimmed my liners for the bumper, I've not noticed much change.

I'm not sure exactly what hole you're talking about but I went through every hole on that trail without slipping a tire. There was one hole where water came over my hood but never had a traction issue. I did get stuck once trying to get around John, when his truck was being worked on, and found where all the mud and clay was but it's not the normal part of the trail. That hole John almost messed up on was solely because his inner fender liner was cut and angled down which was a direct scoop for water into his intake tube. If he would've even drove slower, he would've been just fine. Immediately after that, a few of us drove through it at 2 mph with no issue.

It's funny to me because we had stopped a few mins prior for some reason and I was showing John how I made an inner fender liner and how sealed up it was and he said something to the effect of "Yeah mines not covered at all. I really need to do what you did." So he knew it was a problem and it proved to be. But a snorkel isn't needed, nor is rerouting the intake into the engine bay needed. Just make sure you have a competent fender liner and dont hit the hole at 80mph.

The new gears and lockers did you well then, I assume.
I don't have any pics on hand of my liners, but this is definitely something I'll think about when I've got time to kill and adjust it to keep water away.

Gears are only noticable at like 1200 rpms where I wasnt having to play with the clutch pedal nearly as much. I can't really tell a power difference, just a really low end torque difference. Keep in mind I only went 1 gear ratio higher and I went from very bald tires to very new tires so I wasn't going to see much power difference. Plus, I haven't even changed the break-in fluid yet so I'm sure I'll feel a difference after doing that. And I never used the front locker and rear locker is the same. It's my tires that are so superior over everyone else's. Those tires were bread for LBL trails and really proved it.
