Looks nice but that's a 2nd gen.
Did you add the tube to the sides after? Don't see that as an option on their site.
Also they don't make high clearance wrap around bumpers for the 1st gen, and their wrap around bumper right now (which doesn't need cutting the bed) looks kinda goofy IMO

 

That tube is optional on the 05-15's, but we do not currently have an option like that for our 96-04 wrap rear bumpers.

IMO on the 1st gen theres really no reason to chop into the bed sides like on the 05+ Tacomas for clearance due to the much smaller quarter panel size. Theres very minimal clearance to be gained in doing so, unless you're going extremely basic and just wrapping a single tube around the side of the truck as the bumper.
Our wrap rear is higher clearance than any of the tube wrap around bumpers I've come across, mainly because we wrap plate under the bed side and tie our side reinforcement tube inside the bumper/bedside vs under like the tube options. That gives us a good 1 1/2" clearance advantage over the full tube options that guard the same area.

What in particular do you find 'goofy' about our wrap rear? I'm just curious because I feel I've considered as many situations and design styles/purpose as possible and in turn offer a very well rounded option for you guys, but then again different people have different wants and needs so I'm not sure if there may be some sort of oversight on my part.

 

No doubt that’s a good looking bumper. Looks like you could fit it a little more snug at the bottom corners but maybe that’s due to weight sag at the back, tough to tell from that pic.

 

Neither of mine cut the bed side either. We don't have a fat low hanging ass like newer gens so it's not needed.

 

I think ‘not needed’ is a matter of preference and design strategic/specific. I cut my besides a few inches so the tube we installed from the wrap around to the frame would be up higher without having to go through the bedside. I get that self fab-ed and production processes are different which is why I chose to build not buy. To each there own I guess.

 

Idk the frame and the shackles hang already so low. Doesn't seem needed at all. It's a common choice though for some. But I've not see the need personally from the one I've run and built.

 

I think the tube wrap arounds generally look cleaner (like the CBI outback or the old Demello hybrid).




That being said, your explanation does make sense. I think the only thing I don't like about the Relentless wrap around is that it sticks out quite a bit. The CBI for instance (which requires cutting) looks a lot cleaner.




I think my main gripe with your wrap around is you can see the underside sticking out around the flare.




I'm not opposed to just chopped off the flare right there, unless it's the tube style like in the first pic. Ideally I'd love to see a standard non wrap around bumper that you offer with tubing on the sides similar to the demello/CBI hybrid. I think that would be legit! Or just a standard cut-to-fit high clearance bumper.

Your non wrap around bumper is my favorite, and I've been trying to figure out how to add tube to it to make some side protection, but I don't know how I'd be able to make it work without tucking in the outside edges of the bumper like the other hybrids. I just don't love the look of the wrap around version, but maybe a cut-to-fit version would look cleaner. I know not much clearance is gained but it does look a little cleaner IMO. hope this helps! (see post below too, blackdawg's fabbed bumper looks clean too and it's not a cut-to-fit)

 

Yours are super tucked in though, and still looks clean in my opinion. I would buy that if relentless made it look like the pic below.

yours is more flat on the sides like an ARB front bumper but the relentless sort of is "winged" outwards towards the top. I think that's why it looks goofy to me. I get why, because it's the 'standard' bumper design with more plate added to it.

Yep, Bushwackers. I'm running 285/75/17's and 2.75 total BS to clear everything, so the flares are the only thing I've found that'll mostly cover the tires. Tires still poke ~ 1.5"

Here are pics of the hinge and clasp. It's kinda hard to see, but the hinge spindle is actually a shaft that goes down into the bumper and is gusseted on the inside.



Side note, I didn't cut the bedsides. I'm not afraid to cut on the truck, but prefer not to if I don't need to. I feel like I got it all pretty tight and, of course, tied the wings back to the frame.

 

hmm. Can you take some closer pics of the bumper? It def looked like you cut the bedside. Must have the bumper really tucked close!

 

The gap is ~5/8-3/4 almost everywhere except one spot underneath where it's ~3/8- 1/2. The closest spot is where the frame brace is, so I'm not too concerned about it.
