nada....maybe a license plate one day & BA bumpers
the actual nut seems tight...there is a pinched dimple on the nut & it seems intact (the nut is seated where the receiving dimple is on the pinion spline)

    feel ya
I think Im going to try the 'remove the rear driveshaft, put it in 4h, & test' method first
    seems like a safer route

I really dont want to kill myself figuring this out HA

So, pulled the rear driveshaft & went for a spin FWD style in TACO....weird shit boys n girls (felt like I was driving my rav4!)
but the test did prove my howl is from the rear end, as the howl at 60mph was gone in 4HI (with rear driveshaft removed)

I did this & the howl went away
but now Im wondering if it could be the driveshaft itself?

    do bad driveshafts howl?

    No driveshafts don't howl !!!

The reason the rear axle isn't making noise Is because there's now no torque load on the pinion gear

Lift the rear axle off the ground and with the d/shaft disconnected . With a mechanics stethoscope or with a a long screwdriver place them near the pinion and have someone turn the tires

You should hear a groaning sound if the preload is gone or a bad bearing

    $1600 vs $800?
    OEM vs ECGS rebuilt?

yes I found some strange noises coming from the diff with the last test you suggested

I am assuming there should be no noise coming from a properly functioning diff?

Another test you can perform is checking with a laser temp gun !! . Aim the temp gun at the pinion bearing and at the carrier bearing location and the axle bearing location

If notice a significant temp increase that's your area of concern

This test is to be performed with d/shaft connected and take the truck for a short drive then test those areas with the temp gun
