Yes with a mechanics stethoscope or screwdriver listen for abnormal noises at those locations

Also test those same areas again with a laser temp gun after driving it around with D/shaft connected

my neighbor has a scope (I was using a screwdriver) & he is going to come over tomorrow to help me listen to the 3rd member/pinion bearings
hopefully this will produce more definitive results

    game plan for today.....
    1. go get a laser temp reader & mechanics scope
    2. listen to pinion bearings/take laser readings to validate this is my issue
(howl at 50-70mph, most noticable at 60mph, upon decel or using cruise control at 60mph)
    3. do a backflip in celebration of finally get to the bottom of this!
    4. most likely order the ECGS rebuilt 3rd member & send mine back for core value

    what a cha cha folks

The 3rd needs replacing. Order one from ECGS and be done with it. Not sure why you are going to all this trouble.

I enjoy learning new things & acquiring tools
the knowledge I am gaining from this will come in handy down the road of life

furthermore, in the future another tacoma owner may have this same prob & can use this thread for guidance on steps/tests to take to isolate a bad pinion bearing...
I wish I had access to a thread like this a few months back

checked it with a scope today...found a rumbling noise in the diff...most predominant at where the pinion bearing are located
seems to all check out that my one of the pinion bearings is worn out

time for ECGS rebuilt 3rd member....cant wait to roll again howl free

Awesome , you followed my advise and you found the problem . Oh and yes rumbling sound is a bad bearing !!!!

If youre getting a rebuild from ECGS get it with a solid pinion spacer

yeah, Im not to thrilled on dropping $800 on this...but its the 1st major issue I have encountered in 300k miles, other than the needle bearing on front diff...that was easy & relatively cheap to fix

how many miles you got on your taco?
