I actually just watched the first two episodes. Went in not knowing anything about it. So far its worth a watch but nothing to special IMO. Interesting to watch as a fan but not sure someone not into racing would want to watch it.

Grand Prix Driver on Amazon Prime is still one i recommend. Follows McLaren a lot more behind the scenes rather than just racing. Was interesting to watch and se emore what goes into building the cars

Will this be the year that an Aussie will win the Australian Grand Prix?

Long time NASCAR fan here. Have tried to watch F1 a few times in the past but like anything new, it’s hard to watch when you don’t understand what to watch for and nobody I know to “teach” me.

I binge watched the Netflix series so I feel I’ve got a little bit of understanding and will give it an honest go this year. Looking forward to the first practice today.

Any tips, insights, etc. would be appreciated.

one batch, two batch.. penny & dime.
eh I agree with @Rons01TRD at least for the season opener. Last year I set my DVR and "tried" to go to sleep...I couldn't. Just lied awake as I wondered if the dvr was even doing a good enough job...

Mercedes has been top dog for too long and we long for a different champion. Ferrari hasn't been top dog in years and some of us are hoping that changes this year. Redbull was top dog before Mercedes went on it's current run and some of us are hoping they make it back to championship form. Big battles below the top three teams to see who can compete with the top three and who will be best of the rest. Renault engines vs Honda engines will also be a battle but if you saw the Netflix series then you are up to date on that. The series does an excellent job in preparing you for what battles are to come in the 2019 season.

Right turns are actually utilized, they'll race in rain (to a limit), random yellow flags don't exist, they don't stop because they made it half way, cars are way fucking faster, Mercedes is the one to beat for the last few years.

Once they get in a few laps, the cars have DRS (drag reduction system) when they are within a second of the car ahead of them...this helps the car behind catch up to the car ahead of it by opening a "slot" in the rear wing to reduce drag and encourages more passing. The last couple years, when Mercedes...and specifically Lewis Hamilton get out in front, the race is over for winner... no fuel ups during the race...

Like NASCAR, first across the line wins. Unlike NASCAR, these guys know how to turn right and drive in the wet!

    F1 101-
    Standing start.
Turn 1 is brutal and the accident will be shown 3-4 times at least.
There is a race lap limit but also a 2 hour time limit. It's rare to hit the time limit...usually only happens in crazy rain where they're going slow and have multiple accidents.
2 car teams, cars aren't nearly as standardized as in NASCAR.
In years past there are two races within the race. One between Ferrari, Red Bull, and Mercedes. One between everyone else (smaller R&D budgets hold them back)
DRS = Drag Reduction System. If you're within 1 second of the car in front of you at certain points on the track can open a flap on your rear wing for less drag and downforce. This is to aid in passing.
Multiple types of tires with a requirement to run on multiple compounds. The compounds have changed again this year so it may be faster to do 2 pit stops with faster tires that degrade faster rather than 1 pit stop and have to baby them.
    No refueling.
Pit stops are bout 2.8-3.5 seconds for a 4 tire change. Try to get that at Firestone!
Each track has 3 sectors. a "Green" sector is the drivers personal best on that sector of the track. "Purple" means fastest of the day for any driver.

There are currently no American drivers. HAAS is the only American based team (although they are all really international teams), so regardless of who you're cheering on to win the race (Ferrari since they are the HAAS engine supplier), cheer for HAAS as the "Best of the rest".

Awesome! Thanks for the quick run downs...I’ve already learned more and am more excited to begin watching. I didn’t know Red Bull was considered one of the top three even though they finished 3rd last year.

I’m definitely getting behind Haas because getting behind somebody makes watching more enjoyable for me...plus them being an American (kind of) team and my familiarity with the name from NASCAR. I like that they’re a young team and an underdog. The Netflix series really gave me an inside look at them (as well as Red Bull) which helped me get a baseline understanding of what’s going on currently.

How many episodes are available on Netflix for the new show? I saw the preview then forgot about it lol. Guess I'll need to start watching asap

I watched the documentary on Mclaren a while back, it was very cool behind the scenes.

10 episodes I believe...the whole series is there. I watched a documentary on Mclaren a while back too that piqued my interest. I think it was right after the current CEO stepped in and they opened the new facility.
