Dual Zone Climate Controls

Anyone know if its possible to upgrade from non-premium climate controls(knobs) to the sweet looking dual zone controls???

You can but it’s not worth it. You have to tear your whole dash apart and install new components and modify your truck to be able that. It would be easier to just trade in if you really want it.

 

what about just for the aesthetics? i like the digital look.

 

The dual zone controls will fit in the hole you take your current controls out of....they just won't work.

 

You could just buy one of these for aesthetics?

 

there is an extra wire harness on my SR that plugs in to an empty female spot in back of controls. So it seems like all of them could be wired for dual zone. But others have said in other threads there is some sort of electric dampers/zone fans that are used to balance the dual zone. I guess there is also extra thermostats.

 

I agree with the above, if you could find a wrecked vehicle it wouldn’t be an awful project. You would need dampers and probably ducting plus the head unit. Most likely complete disassembly of both dashes to perform the work. I think it would be a good project and seriously encourage you to look into a donor. Buying individually would be cost prohibitive.

 

No offense op but trying to do things like this just don’t make sense. If you want the premium stuff you have to buy it up front. Things like upgrading from single to dual zone, 2x4 to 4x4, and 4 cylinder to v6 are just not practical to try and do. Most people don’t like paying for say the premium package but to try and add these items in later will end up costing you 3x the price. Be happy with what you picked and maybe upgrade to clazzio seats if you want that premium feel.

 

Buying all the parts new would be multiple thousands of dollars. It would be cheaper and easier to trade the truck in against a new one with the features you want.

If you can find the correct wrecked truck and you'll have to spend days of your time doing major truck surgery inside the dash.

 

I say if the time is available go for it. It’s a pretty common thing to source parts from junkyards to upgrade vehicles. I’m doing a similar thing with my Jetta (factory NAV from a different Gen, steering wheel controls and paddle shifters, all factory) Adding in factory equipment in other parts of the car world.

If things are viewed as a hobby money and time does not need to be justified. Why do people Golf, gamble, waste money on pets etc ...because we want to. I don’t find it helpful when people tell me how to spend money...

 

True for the dual zone that it likely needs too many parts to make sense but there are some features that are not too hard to add to an SR. the fact that dual zone is just not that front panel is what makes it the expensive upgrade. Dual zone is expensive because you need some special vents and/or inline vent fans or something like that.

*NAV Radio with android auto.. that premium stock toyota doesn't have $500
*Looking to do a power mirror upgrade as I park in city every day.

I was $24,800 out the door.. Add another $1500 for the above options. It would have cost me a bunch more to get those options from Toyota.

 

Don't listen to this guy. Disassembling the dash on a brand new truck is madness.

If you managed to pull it off you would probably have a bunch of new rattles to enjoy as well.

 

I took a good part of he dash apart to replace radio.. It is actually super easy with clips that are really reuasble. So dont listen to this guy

 

Ok pal. You think replacing a radio is the same as removing the entire dash to retrofit in a new climate control system with ducting, valves, blowers and thermostats?

I guess the question becomes how much needs to be replaced. I did do some Toyota part searches but entering a vin with dual zone and one without I dont actually get different diagrams on the toyota parts website. But yes I agree that if the heater box is burried(which I assume it is) and it needs to be changed then that is a whole different ball game. I was more talking about the amount of dash removal that is needed to get to the vents and to the controls. I would love to see what needs to be replaced on the toyota parts site but I cant find the pages that show the differnt blowers/venting

 

You can do whatever you want. We just try to keep people from ruining their truck. There are some mods that are good, safe, fun to do etc. Then there are some mods that will cause the value of the truck to drop and probably not ever function correctly like going from 2WD to 4WD, 2.7L to 3.5L, regular climate to dual zone climate, etc.

Can it be done? Yep. Should you do it? Nope.

 

OMG, comparing removing a dash trim piece, 4 bolts, and a few wiring harness plugs -to- a complete internal dash duct overhaul; is like comparing a minor paint scratch repair using a pen -to- a full blown auto body strip/sand/bondo/repaint... 15 minutes to 15 days of work..!
