Increases oil flow to the Mass Airflow Sensor. Over time will damage it.

Again why does Toyota sell a TRD version of the K&N if it damages anything?

No HacksawMark To simplify, a MAF sensor has a grid of wires in it with low voltage current at all times much like the element in a light bulb, at idle there is lo air flow ...........almost no resistance on the grid, the higher the flow of air, the grater the resistance.........this is measured by the ECU and helps control fuel flow to the injectors. there are others sensors in a rather complicated system that control fuel pressure and volume to keep a predetermined Fuel /Air ratio no matter what the engine load is . hope this helps.

    OEM.

I did a K&N CAI. It's laying on my garage floor somewhere I think.

Read the literature closely. A K&N will give a bit more HP; when the engine is running 5000-6000 rpm's. There is virtually no difference at normal engine speeds. If you're building a race car to run at the local dirt track on Saturday night a K&N might give you 1-2 extra mph, which might make a difference. On a Tacoma you'll never notice.

I had a 1998 F-150 bought new a few years ago. When it needed a new filter it was going to cost me $30. I looked at a reusable K&N for $50. Never expected any gains in fuel mileage or performance. And didn't get any. But it did save me some money over the years I owned the truck. If the OEM filters had been more reasonably priced I'd have gone that way. Never bought another after I sold the truck.

I also wouldn't trust one if I were going to use it in dusty conditions regularly.

And don’t forget the transference of heat which takes place when using a K&N, it somehow manages to take that unbearably hot engine-bay air and manipulate the molecules so that your engine receives cold air instead.

Isn't that the point of a CAI like the OEM intake that comes on a Taco from the factory? The air comes from the same right fender well as a TRD CAI. The air does not come from the engine bay.

    Hence the :notsure:.

So if it helps control the fuel flow to keep a predetermined fuel/air ratio, I wonder what value does the K&N filter offer? :notsure:

I have had KnN filters in both of my trucks, never had to replace the MAFS. I had 225k on my 2000 Tacoma and had to clean the MAFS maybe 3 times. Not a big deal. I put another KnN drop in filter in my TRD Pro (don’t know why the Pros don’t come with the TRD cai and filter) and also did the G-tek Fab air box mod combined with the OV tune.....Wow what a difference. Way worth it in my opinion.

Just keeps the air colder by allowing more flow, and hopefully a few more HP. And then there are the cost savings overall. The K&N cost me $45 a OEM is around $30, but the K&N is good for a million miles. Although there is the additional cost of the cleaning.

Why do they sell the newer 2nd gen trd intake that runs lean?
Why did they sell a NON carb legal "trd" intake?

Damage only occurs if the filter is oiled excessively. Not a foolproof process. So if damage occurs, Toyota blames improper maintenance and happily offers you a replacement MAF sensor for $250.

My experience with K&N filters shortcomings was garnered about 15 years ago through several ATV engine failures. Nikasil plated aluminum cylinders very much dislike dust. If a filter is restrictive, one needs a larger filter... fortunately, Toyota supplies a generously sized unit on the Taco.
