It's been a loooong time (1986) since I owned a Toyota truck. Since that time I've had many Chevy & Ford pickups. Mostly for work as a carpenter/home builder.

I'm currently driving a brand new 2010 F-150...and hate it. Damn thing is huge and I'm not. LoL. And my wife couldn't drive this tank for crap...which becomes necessary when I've has a few too many. :D

This new one will be a DD as well as a part time "work" truck/grocery getter. As I'm now old and kinda semi retired (I'll really quit when I'm dead...I like to work even though it hurts nowadays  )

    OK...

    Thoughts from you owners:
    Long bed/short bed?
    4x4 vs. 2x4?
    Trd vs Sport vs SR5?

I have owned many white and silver trucks. Current truck is silver. I have my eye on a "Pryite Mica" 4x4 SR5 double cab. I kinda like the color...it's a brownish/dark gold metallic.

    Y'all's thoughts?

    TIA

btw...I've been lurkin' here for a while. I've learned a bit. Such as...I may be in the oldest 1% category.

I have a 2010 DC 4x2 TRD Sport and I love it. It's big enough to carry 4 adults in comfort, I can haul as much gear diving or camping as I want or need. I can tow up to 6500 lbs. It's small enough to park in my driveway without my wife hitting it ;) and she can drive it. She is 4'9" and has no trouble driving it around.

Awesome to hear you are coming back to the good side!

Things to think about to help you decide.

    Bed Length:
If you arent doing to much work with this truck, and you just occasionally need it for hauling a few things I would go with the short bed. It is what I have, and I personally haven't attempted to load anything into it that wouldn't fit. But that is me personally.

    4X4 Vs. 2X4:
Since you say you are in the %1 oldest category, lol, I would guess you arent going to be doing to much off-roading with this truck. So I am going to lean this more towards where you live. If you live in an area where snow is a common thing, I think it is a pretty obvious decision to go with the 4X4. I love the four wheel drive set-up on the Tacoma. But if you live in a flatter area that rarely sees any harsh climates, such as Florida, I would say just go with the 2X4.

    Model:
For me this was a pretty easy decision. The TRD Sport and Off-Road both offer much more comfortable seats, which was a huge plus for me. I immediately ruled out the SR5, just for the seats in the TRD's. I went with the Sport, simply for the color matched bumper, handles, mirrors, and the hood scoop. These are all options that are not offered on the Off-Road.

Hope some of that information was useful.

    Where do you live?

    Thanks hawkeye...and thanks all.

I'm 50 and live in Florida.

I didn't know the seats are that much nicer in the TRD and Sport packages...I'll have to check that out.

I like having 4x4 for sand not so much for "off road" or mudding (I don't do either). Nothing sucks more than pulling off the side of the road to go to the beach or parking in a remote spot along the bay and getting stuck. Also, when working on new home sites...it's nice to pull closer to the house to unload stuff.

Sounds like I already made up my mind on the 4x4 thing...but I see many of you guys (and gals) driving the 2x4 off road. Whats up with that?

    No problem.

Some prefer the TRD seats, some prefer the SR5 seats. It's really a personal opinion. I have a TRD Sport and I wouldn't do a thing different.

What's the difference between the seats? I know the seats in the SR5 are not power. Is the seat shape or fabric covers different? Are they power in the TRD/Sport?

I kinda like how the pass seat folds flat in the SR5. As I understand the Toyota website...it doesn't in the TRD/Sport?

Shape and fabric. And no, for some stupid reason, Toyota doesn't get the demand for power seats. And honestly, I am not sure if my seat folds flat or not. I will check and let you know though.

What he said. I ended up with a 2007 SR5 4x4 short bed. In hind sight (coming from a full size truck) I wish I had gotten the long bed but it's not enough to make me trade in the truck by any means. Otherwise, no regrets. I didn't go for the off-road package since I couldn't see actually using the options it came with. Good luck!

    Agree
I knew i wanted the double cab
Dont really have a need for a rear locker at all, so the cheaper SR5 was perfect.
Needed the 4x4 with buffalo winters
With the new Duratracs i put on, preatty much unstopable

Bed exender, leather seats, weather tech floor mats, extra d-rings.
I bought the double cab trd off road to replace my totalled 2005 tundra access cab. I got the short bed and added the bed extender for those times that I need to haul a bit more. I've been loving this truck, and after having an F150 double cab for 3 days I was convicned I don't need such a huge truck that is tough to park. The tacoma is perfect size, and the 4.0 liter is great for towing too.

I too had a Brand New Ford. Traded in my 06 F150 with 20K miles on it for a DC TRD OR Package. I love my Taco. Yeah it took a bit to get used to a smaller truck but it more practical and more fun to drive than that tank.

i think you have already made your mind up larry and it's a good choice. also, i think it's better to have the 4x4 just in case, than to not have it and need it at some unexpected time.

I had a 4x2 because the $ numbers worked out that way originally. Plus I never thought I'd really use 4x4 being in Arizona. Then I met up with some of the AZ crew and hit up Butcher Jones and immediately wished I had a 4x4 (which I do now). In the SW region you rarely ever 'need' 4x4... more of a wheeling/sport bit than a mandatory need in winter country.

The TRD sport seats are more comfy to me as well (though I liked 05-08 style better). Same seats in Sport and Off-Road.

As for the bed... well if you can do what you need in 5ft or with a bed extender on the tail gate... then it's fine. If you need 6ft... well that's up to you. I haven't really had much hauling in my short bed yet so it's hard to say for me thus far. I had an Undercover tonnaue cover on my 6ft bed on my last truck and it was very useful (locked, dry, and hard top I could stand on).

As for TRD Sport vs Off-Road... well if you need a locker and a-trac for wheel'n.... the choice is clear. If you like fake hood scoops... that choice is clear. I like the color matched panels though... which I'll be doing most to on my off-road anyway. The Off-Road adds useful traction... the sport is more just anesthetics. 05-08 the sport gave you a mechanical clutch based LSD.... but 09+ all models regardless have auto LSD (using the brakes to do the job)... sport/off-road or sr5...

I will say I like the double cab better than the access... but my access was a pretty sexy look'n truck. If it was 4x4 I'd have wanted to keep it for ever despite a bit of desire for the doublecab. The 09+ access cab redesign is useless though... horrible 'upgrade.'

    GL in the dealing!

Sounds like you have made most of your choices, buy I'll add my two cents.....
I have an 08 DC LB 4x4 Sport in Silver.
I beat my truck up daily using it as a landscape truck for my company, and as my daily driver. I have overloaded the bed with stone or plant material for the dump, and have had no problems. I have the long bed with an under the rail toolbox and I still have a respectable bed for tools etc. Also the four door leaves room inside for tool bags or things you have to secure. In addition to all of that I also tow my Tacoma behind my Class A motor home! Great all around truck for sure.
Whatever you choose I'm sure you will be happy with it.

I look at the new F-150 and think damn, that extra room would be nice. Never driven one though but often wish I had more room especially on a longer trip. But running around town and to work the Tacoma is a nice size. I have the DC with short bed. I can haul a lot in the short bed just by using cargo-straps and the tie-downs.
