3rd Gen HID vs LED vs Halogen H11 projector headlights

I really need to start making a beer map.

 

Amazing thread. I had the 35w morimoto kit for a few months but had annoying bulb shake. Ripped them out and have been suffering to see the road with oem bulbs. At this point, im not so much in search of color (i.e. 4300-5000k) as performance, durability, and simplicity which leads me to running halogens over led, hid.

I think I will go for the hella h9 bulbs as they last longer and are much cheaper to replace, however, after reading through all the threads, I still don't understand why there needs to be cutting involved if you have a H11-H9 wire connector. The cutting doesn't scare me, but it just doesnt make sense. I had experience with my HID kit with the h11-9006 connector and that was simple plug-and-play.... Edit: also in search of a very yellow/amber fog. I dont think its worth getting the GEs just for the 3500k. I was thinking of even running lamin-x

 

These connectors pictured have a small tab between the two terminals of the male end that need to be shaved out to fit into the H9 bulb. Then put the pig tail in between the factory harness and your new bulb. This keeps factory wiring original and prevents the need to trim replacement bulbs in the future. Trimming the pig tail is very easy. I used my pocket knife and it two about 90 seconds per pig tail.

 

right, i guess I just could not understand the point of buying an h11-h9 adapters if you still had to trim the h9 end. I think I will go ahead and just buy the $7 adapters if it means my oem wiring remains untouched

 

Also I saw this reflection as I pulled into work this morning. I am thoroughly impressed with the Hellas and Voslas. Such an awesome upgrade for very little cost.

 

I am very much against altering factory wiring so that was my reasoning. You’ll see when you have the pig tails in your hand the tab that needs to be trimmed. Super easy.

Right, using the fogs in clear weather can also decrease your night vision further down the road. I don’t normally run them unless it’s inclement weather. My photo was for entertainment purposes only.

 

To be clear, the OEM wiring always remained untouched. It was just the inner plastic tab on the H9 bulb that had to be trimmed. Getting the adapter harness and trimming it once makes it so you don’t need to trim the each time, making it then plug and play.

 

A well constructed, respectful response to my question! Thank you! I read through this, and get the logic. I will submit, however, that as a motorcycle rider, it's not only about what the light can enable you see, it's what they do to make yourself more visible to others, which is actually why I leave mine on (I have touring fogs on my 2018 Yamaha Venture as well that stay on).

BLUF, I get the reasons outlined above, make perfect sense, however, lights are a good tool to help others see you as well.

After getting the final bulbs tested and reorganizing post #2/3, I’ll add this up there for easier reference to others.

 

We don't yet have an H11-H9 connector. People are getting an H11-H11 connector and modding it to accept H9 bulbs.

 

Ahhhh, so there is no h11-h9. That makes perfect sense

 

*yet. I’m working on getting an HD relayed harness made that will be plug and play H11->H9 to further increase the output of the H9 bulbs.

 

With the anticipated harness... we can still safely run the H9 bulbs on the OEM wiring?

 

Yes, you can safely run the H9s on the OEM wiring. You can check your headlight fuse rating, the H9s pull 72w (rated at 65w), 72w/12v=6A conservative. Actual voltage will be higher on battery voltage and even higher on alternator voltage, both reducing Amperage.

Voltage drop test won’t tell you the safety factor, it tells you the efficiency loss of the OEM wiring harness, aka the performance improvement potential by running an HD relayed harness directly to the battery.

 

What is frustrating is when you spend $150+ on lighting products from China from “reputable companies” for a thread and multiple shipments claim to be delivered when they did not arrive. Meaning I’ve waited for a month plus on multiple shipments and thrown money away on companies that did not deliver, multiple times. I will not recommend these companies or products that fail to deliver to others, which is unfortunate from a product evaluation standpoint. These were the last lights I was waiting on to be delivered, which means crown for best performance bulb over all goes to the Philips Vision +30 H9.
