Got a cruiser that’s about 800lbs and I’ll be moving in a few months. I believe the bed weight limit is 1k. Anyone got any tips or suggestions? Is this a bad idea?

It's not optimal, but I've hauled about the same amount in wood a few times. I just put in Sumo Springs to help with the ride quality but that doesn't increase the bed limit, especially since ours are plastic. Can you rent a trailer to use? Also, roughly how far is the drive to your new place?

I could rent a trailer, I’m just cheap lol. Not sure on the distance yet, I’m military so I’m waiting on my orders.

i would not recommend putting kickstand down on bed....cut a piece of plywood using the bed mat as a template this does wonders to protect the bed.... either use a wheel chock or tie the bike down upright and not resting on the kickstand..... this allows the suspension of the bike (at least in the rear) to dampen bumps.... if you leave kickstand down all force is transferred right to the bed.

It can be done if you load the bike diagonally. I hauled 2 sport bikes with misc. gear so the weight was close to 1000 lbs. It's gonna sag a lot FYI!

"I can rent a trailer", costs about $30.
"I can put new springs in" Costs... $300.
"I can load an 800lb bike and leave the tailgate supporting 1/2 the weight." Costs about $300 for a new tailgate.

    I'm cheap...

Really, a trailer is the way to go when it comes to bikes. I've bed hauled, I"ve trailered. I've done sport bikes, cruisers and ATV's both ways in everything from a tacoma to an f250. Loading a bike, especially an 800lb bike into a bed is at best a pain. You need some ramps that will support the weight ($$50-$100) and if anything goes wrong you've got a trashed bike and bed damage to repair. I've had it go right 99.99999% of the time. I've had it go wrong... 2 or 3 times and been fast/strong enough to get it done without damage. But it's a bit of a pucker type event. And I watched my buddy break his wrist and $1k in damage when it went wrong for him.

If you're going to haul more than a few times, get a cheap HF flatbed trailer and build it into a biker hauler. Otherwise just rent a Uhaul. Use soft straps so the hooks don't mess up your bike. Don't overstrap it and bend anything. It just needs to be snug enough to not move. Use bungie cords (losing a strap sucks). Don't trust anyone besides you to strap it down (again losing a strap sucks and my brothers a moron). And angles are your friends. If you strap up and down instead of at angles, you might was well not strap it at all. Your bike will suffer less damage falling off then falling off and being drug at 60mph.

I'm also cheap and when I was in my 20's I'd blow out my sphinkter trying to save a buck. Now I'm not in my 20's and smart enough to realize that saving a buck on an item by doing thousands in damage is a really dumb way to save a buck.

im not a third gen but im sure they have a higher payload than 2nd gens and I've had my buddies renegade which is close to 700 pounds dry with gear in back of my truck and it was fine, so ide say you would be fine.

It'll haul no problems. They truck can stop and pull upto 6800lbs in the proper configuration. 1000lbs in the bed will make it squat but it won't hurt anything if you are not hitting the bump stops super hard.

Weight isn't the issue, but I think the length might be. Good chance that if you put it in straight, the back tire will be on the tailgate. That might be okay, but it wouldn't be my favorite way to do it. If you can get it in at a diagonal, that would be better.

The other thing is you might need some pretty long ramps. Those bikes don't have much clearance and there's a chance you'll high center it when you're loading it.

I think my vote would be just to get a trailer for the bike and load the bed with other stuff. The Uhaul trailers work great for this.

Unless you have access or have the proper ramp to get that bad ass cruiser in the bed, I would rent a trailer.

If you get stationed in CO, hit up some of us local guys.

    Thanks for serving.

Thanks for the input guys. Think I’ll start shopping for a small trailer. I’m actually hoping to get fort Carson.

I did this....but due to last minute circumstances. Had a Uhaul lined up when i got to Uhaul in SC but no trailer in sight and could have one in am but for triple the price I had signed up to and did a deposit for online! A bad day for sure as I had been on the bike nonstop to Spartanburg SC from WV to get my SR and needed to be back early next day.....I had to load this 800 and change bike by myself. I went to Lowe's and used 2 x 8 for a center rail for the bike to rest on. At the tail gate I raised the 2 x off the tailgate with a cut shim. Bike was fine on back but not something I would want to do on a regular basis....though if doing a one way rental on a trailer and it was ridiculously high....hmmm....
