Been lurking for a long time and decided to join. Enjoy the form and all of the knowledge. Got a 2018 DC TRD Sport 4x4 in Quicksand back in July of 2018. Loved it so far besides a few minor things (dash rattle and master cylinder recall). All got fixed so all is good. I do have a question about something that has been occurring consistently throughout winter. I'm in the midwest so it has been really cold for several months. During my normal drives I have noticed when I stop at a stop light or a stop sign that the rpms will surge like the truck is trying to not die. Roughly 200-500 rpms each times it surges. It's similar to when someone covers the brakes and revs the engine. I first thought I got some bad gas but it has happened for several months sporadically and I've gone to different gas stations. Just trying to get an idea if that is normal for this engine or if it's a sensor that needs to be cleaned. Took the truck to the dealer but they were not able to recreate it after they drove it 1 mile. Could not find any answers via Toyota website and since dealer kind of shrugged it off I figured I should ask other tacoma owners. I have videos but have to figure out how to upload those. 20180620_204457.jpg

My 2017 does this but only when it's cold after start up. But never at red lights and such. Try searching TW.

Got the windshield defroster on? RPMs will surge when the A/C compressor engages.

Typically don't have defroster on as the truck is garage stored. Only thing on would be seat warmer (life safer) with no A/C or Heat going. Does it after I have stopped and just waiting for the light to change.

Does it do this only when the engine is cold or all the time?

Could also be logic with the vacuum pump. Does it do this if you shift to neutral, engage the e-brake, and let go of the brake pedal?

It does across various engine temps. Some days when the engine is still cold, other days it does it even after engine has reached operational temp. Have not tried shifting it out of drive. I just make sure to firmly press the brake down so that there's little chance the truck moves forward since it is in drive.

Hooyah! Welcome to the taco forum fellow sports owner.

Onto your question. I do not notice this the RPM slightly rising after a stop light since I do not use my heated seats that often. I'll try this stuff out to see if I can repeat the same issue you have.

My question to you is how did you fix your dash rattle? I noticed on mine. Somewhere near the front seat passenger, on dash, the speakers (cover?) seems to rattle a bit.

Took the truck to the dealer and told them I thought it was the sensor embedded into the passenger speaker on the dash that was rattling. The dealership felt it was coming from the A-pillar so that put felt in between A-pillar and the passenger speaker on the dash. Got ride of 95% of the rattle that I was hearing. Not going to worrying about the very minor rattle left since the plastic of the dash is prone to rattle some during cold temps.

That's what I'm going to do when I bring my "Black Pearl" to her first dealer service treatment. Thanks!

Welcome to TW! You might have better luck getting an answer to your surging issue in the 3rd Gen section. If 1 dealership blew you off try another. Some are better than others.

Appreciate the welcome. I'll have to check out another dealership if it does it. The original dealership said it was not throwing any codes when they checked so a little stumped on what it could be.
