I think I may need a little help here.
Just got a truck (see sig). It only have 900 miles on it.

I am not sure it the engine is ticking or if its just in my head.
If I go to a drive thru window or drive up ATM I can deffinately hear what sounds like tick , tick , tick sounds coming from the engine.

If I open the hood I beleive the sound is coming from the top of the engine on both sides.

How much is normal sound vs "crap I have to bring it back" sound??

I am overly paranoid here? I just dont remember my last truck sounding quite like this?

    Thanks for any advice.

    getting there....
well, toyota does have some overly loud valva trains. im suspecting you are hearing normal injector ticking. what year is your truck? on the 05's and some of the 06's, there is a tsb for getting the catalytic converters swapped out. if yours is an 07, my suggestion would be to swap over to synthetic oil if you can afford to. this will help a little, but you are still gonna have the injector tick, no matter what you do. the synthetic oil will help quieten it down just a bit though.

also, over time, you will get pretty used to it.

edit:i see now you have an 07.........go for synthetic oil. mobil1, pennzoil platinum, royal purple, amsoil, redline....all very good!

that is exactly where i started hearing mine about 1&half years ago. I have been using mobil1 and it did quiet it a bit but its still there. i have it documented at the dealership every 10k so if it does blow up some day i can say i told you so. you will have to deal with it or get another truck. mine is an 06 with 23k.

Well...rest assured it's not going to blow because of the notorious "engine tick"... this is common in the 4.0L. The lifters incorporate "shim buckets" and this is what sets the clearance on the valves. Therefore, the lifters do NOT adjust and more than likely....this is what you hearing. If you want to quiet them up use a 'quality' synthetic. When I made the switch to Amsoil 2000 series.... the noise virtually dissipated.;)

    Great thanks for the advice.
I plan on switching to synthetic on the first oil change. I will try to post the results.

dont worry about the tick, my street bike which redlines at 16500RPM's ticks at idle. my truck has about 200 miles on it and it ticks, but i have no loss of power or any problems what so ever. if its a concern take it to the dealer, you do have a 36,000 mile warrenty and have them investigate, it's free!

Hey does anybody know if this is normal? I bought my truck a week ago didnt notice it cuz i was excited and i just noticed clicking noises coming from the engine when i went home. Its sounds like an old typewriter clicking, standing in front of the hood it seems like the noise is coming from the right side of the engine. Can anyone tell me if you hear this on your engine too. i have an 07 taco SR5 Prerunner trd sport double cab 2wd automatic with only 700 miles. went to the dealer to ask about it and they say its normal just fuel injectors doing their jobs, but i dont know sound like valves to me. Appreciate your help! Thanks

Do NOT switch to synthetic oil on your first oil change. You need to let the engine break in first with dino oil, then switch to synthetic.

I didn't notice the ticking on my 2 week old '07 PreRunner until reading the posts. I can only hear it when I'm outside the truck. I don't hear anything inside so... I think it sounds kinda cool.

yup i dont really hear it inside the truck, but when your outside i can hear the clicking noise. open the hood and you'll really hear it. sounds like an old typewriter, dealers says its normal just the injectors doing their jobs. these are the only injectors i've heard making clicking noises so far.

I'd wait till at least the second oil change, but hey it's your truck. I believe the break in period is more than 5000 miles.

if you read your manual it say the break in period is 1000 miles..and yes it is my truck...i thought you had a good legit reason for not doing it at your first oil change...but i guess not.

I got the infamous engine tick comming from most noticeably the driver side of engine. Seems to get louder after warmed up. I don't notice the ticking at all while driving though, unless next to a wall or sound reflecting surface. Then I hear it a bit. Mostly at idle and from the outside of the truck. I have not taken it back to dealer yet or tried isolating an emmision valve on the head and near the oil filter? I hope this ticking can be quieted. I love my truck!

This is NOT true at all. You can use synthetic in your engine immediately if you want to. Many vehicle applications in fact use synthetic right from the very start. Some oils use an extended amount of Zinc on break in. But that is only 1,000 miles if it were even the case here.

Ya Im pretty sure the ticking is normal, my 06 does it and i was kinda thinking of bringing it in but then i found an old invoice from maintenance done on it with the previous owner and on there it said that there was a ticking sound at idle and that they suspected it was just normal vale train noise.
