Best tires for ride quality yet with a rugged look..

You hear them... but they actually ride pretty smooth

 

If you are looking for something that has an aggressive look, but is handles well on the street and maintains MPG, I would stick with a "P" rated tire. I would not go with an "LT" as it adds considerable weight and will cost you the MPGs. Some tires like a Toyo Open Country A/T comes in both a "P" and an "LT" rated. The "P" version is slightly less aggressive than it's LT brother, but still looks good. I would see what brands offer an A/T type tire in "P" rated.

 

I had Falken Wildpeak AT3W in 265/75/16 SL, replaced them with Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S after 5 months. I bought the Falken after reading all the raving reviews on Tacoma World, did not like them on the truck, definitely more road noise than the stock Goodyear Wrangler, had shimmy on highway, even after road force balance by 2 different tire shop. Have the Cooper on my truck for almost 2 months now, drove through midwest snow storm, packed snow, ice, rain, zero issues. No road noise, no shimmy, better MPG since its lighter weight.

Best of all, the Cooper were cheaper than Falken at my local Discount Tires. $560 mounted balanced out the door after tax.

 

I was told that the highway shimmy came from aftermarket wheels, some reason the falkens don't play nice with them.

 

That maybe, I had stock 16 inch Pro rims.

My tire shop guy, who I know through my job covering sports and stop on occasion to shoot the bull with, is trying to convince me to go with the Toyo Open Country AT 265/70/16. He says in his line of work he loves the quality of the tire. Such a hard decision. Luckily it will be a few weeks before I get new tires.

 

I have Nitto Terra Grappler G2s, but mine are 17". so I will recommend those if you are still shopping. I just put them on my daughter's Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk as well.

that said, the next tire I will go with will either be GoodYear Ultra Terrains or Duratracs. Those tires are aggressive looking and ride quite well from what I understand. the Nittos ride great with no issues, but they are a tad bit louder than stock tires.

 

If nittos are a tad louder than stock tires, duratracs are 2x tad louder lol but I love them. Would buy them again. Rides nice and smooth. Mine is C rated though.

I ended up going with 265/75/16 Toyo Open Country ATs (1.4 inches taller and .8 inch wider I think). My tire guy made a good deal for me in trading in my stock Toyo tires (HWY tires) so that’s why I went with those. The ride is the same so that’s great and there is a little bit more road noise but I like it.

I went with Michelin LTX A/T2. It's an all terrain tire that's been great off road and in the snow but doesn't beat you to death on the highway. I did a lot of research prior to purchasing these tires and have no regrets. Also I got a good deal on them at Sams Club.

 

Something a little different from the previous posts, but I’ve been very happy with these tires. Handling in the snow has been excellent, but for ice still would go to a dedicated winter tire.

Another vote here for the wildpeaks. Love them so far. No noticeable difference in road noise from stock goodyears and they ride great (C class)

 

I was curious about moving from the 245s to 265s but was worried about rubbing. will that not be an issue on my 2016 SR?

 

SR sits the same height as Offroad and Sport.
