You have 4 gallons left when your light turns on. So it'll go below the "E" line before it dries out.

I've gotten down passed the E line, but I noticed that when I turn off my car, the needle goes about 1/8th inch bellow the line. Has anyone ever completely ran out of gas here?

3.5 -4 for me as well. Never ran out of Gas, and hope to never find out how low it will go before it runs out either.

Pretty sure the taco only has a 20gal tank, including "reserve" but not including the fuel in the lines.

Unless you have a dent in your tank that reduced your capacity.

EDIT: Your altitude would effect this number as liquid at lower pressure expands more and has more volume. I'm at 6000 ft.

x2...I track my mileage religiously, and when on E it is normally ~17 gallons to fill back up...and I think the other posters are right, I think the owner's manual says it's a 21 gal tank.

I try not to find out since the guys here told me that the fuel pump & filter is in the tank it wears out the part prematurely & is a very expensive fix not to mention getting stranded somewhere then a big bill. Now I make sure not to go past a 1/4 tank.

Exactly...but people believe everything they read on the internet. I run the fuel down usually 20-30 miles with the light on. I have always done this on every vehicle I have ever owned and never had a fuel pump fail me. Thats kinda one of those old wives tales. I used to have a turbo honda accord with a walbro 255lph pump in it and ran it down to fumes and never had it fail on me. I have never actually heard of anyone who had a fuel pump failure because of this.

The chevy guys have it happen almost as routine maintenance... there were a few reports on here I read about too.

Anyway I still wouldn't go below 1/4... not just for the fuel pump, but who wants to explain why you forgot and ran out of gas? Talk about embarrassing.

So you fuel up every time you reach 1/4 of a tank?

Sorry man, but that's just silly.

I have heard when the light comes on, you have about 3 gallons in "reserve". I have gone as far as 65 miles after the light came on and have not ran out. I feel comfortable I can go 60 miles if nessesary once the light comes on based on my personal tests.

How is keeping the fuel pump cooled properly silly? I fail to see how doing proper maintenance is silly.
