damage & wear from axle wrap?

    I recently (2 months ago) swapped out my entire stock suspension due to age and wear. I had horrible problems with axle wrap before and I am curious if there are things that I should be inspecting now to see if there was any damage or wear caused by the axle wrap.
    The main reason that I'm asking is that I have noticed in the last few weeks that the clunk and lurching motion which I thought was caused by the axle wrap has returned. It seems to be more noticeable when I am going from reverse to drive but does happen just about every time I stop/start in traffic. But with new leaf packs, shocks and coils I know that its not axle wrap. So what is wrong with my truck? Where do I start looking for a cause? What parts see the most strain from axle wrap?

    And yes, I searched. All of the threads that I found seemed to blame the clunk on axle wrap.

    did you hit all the zerks w/lube? If not, start there. If a-w is the problem (still), look into a good traction bar (e.g., budbuilt)...worth the money imo. As for wear, i've never heard of a-w actually destroying anything...but who knows.

    Hope not. U-joint=expensive right?

    Greased everything up last fall - October I think. I was planning on starting with that and looking for :confused: while I'm under there. I went with the Alcan/Wheeler's 5-pack leafs because I thought that that would solve all of my problems and wouldn't need a traction bar.

    And my concern with the wear and tear of axle wrap is because everything in the driveshaft/rear end gets stretched and compressed with every stop and start. That has to cause some damage over time, right? I was ignorant to the wonderful place known as TW and didn't know what the hell was wrong with my truck so I drove around for a long time suffering from axle wrap.

    the slip yoke (part that comes outta the rear end and connects with drive shaft) really needs to be taken apart and cleaned....and then grease the hell out of it. when taking it apart......mark it so you can put it back as it was, so it will stay balanced. i used a paint pen when i did mine. made a good difference.

    check the u-joints as well. grease them, and see if any have alotta play in them. they can be a pain in the ass....but not too terribly bad, and the part itself aint too expensive.

    Yeah, a u-joint would be a cheap replacement if you do it yourself. You can tell if they are really bad by grabbing on to the driveshaft and trying to turn it. If it rattles= bad.

    Did you have similar problems when you did your suspension - I think you and I have the same set up more or less? I will add the slip yoke and u-joints to my 'to do list' this weekend.

    well....i had it alot mainly before the lift....so i cleaned/greased the slip yoke......then put the lift on. havent had the problem any since i did it.

    Good to know. I didn't have any problems right after the install...well except for the squeaks :eek: ... this just sort of materialized in the last few weeks.

    try the slip yoke and see what happens. if its rusty at all.......clean it...use some fine sand paper on it, then use some anti-seize,put back together...then grease the hell out of it.

    Did you drop (remove) your drive shaft when you re did your leaf pack? Although I don't believe its necessary to do so some people do & if so did you remember to mark exact location(original location) of U joint where it connects to yoke ? & you may want to check your U bolts for torque & re tighten as necessary..... always good to do after driving it a bit after install.... something else to check anyway good luck....:cool:


    one more note : hows the trans. mount ?

    & as mentioned lube,lube & lube some more

    good advice here............always retorque the u bolts 2 or 3 times after you have driven some,as they can loosen up a bit.

    You'd think so, but the slip yoke should take most of the abuse...if you search Google long enough, you'll track down folks who claim uber-damage...but i've never seen it first hand. Imo, don't worry too much until you have something concrete to worry about.:)

    But I do worry - any sign of my baby being unhappy and I'm on the ground or under the hood searching frantically for a cause.

    If I am not mistaken, you like to go trouncing through water and mud often (or maybe I am just confusing that with :stirthepot:), and the more you do that, the more often you should be greasing the drive train, and especially the slip yoke. I think if you look in the owner's manual, it basically says if you immerse it/drive it in flooded conditions, you need to do it daily...IIRC.

    Am I helping yet? I am trying very hard to not just :poking: for once. Being nice is weird. It doesn't come naturally.

    Small improvement, keep trying ;)

    And I do love mud and try to stay out of the water. But there are times where the mud is comprised of more liquid than solid...
    Thinking of doing the diff breather mod too, couldn't hurt.

    my axle wrap returned after my alcans settled in. ...the quick and dirty fix is to add a spring clamp to the leaf pack right in front of the u bolts. this keeps the pack from separating and letting the axle rotate. i'm not sure of the long term impact it's going to have on my springs or other suspension components, but it damn sure fixed the axle wrap on braking.

    you can also prevent the axle wrap in the opposite direction on take off by placing a spring clamp right behind the u bolts.
