Today I played with the LO 4WD a little bit in a smooth dirt road. I noticed that the shifting was very different that in 4WD HI.

It pretty much shifted from 1st to 2nd gear before I got to 5 mph. Is this the normal behavior of the transmission or maybe the transfer case?

I know you are not supposed to drive it fast in 4LO but I went to like 10 mph and it had already shifter to like third gear.

Is this the normal shifting pattern for the 4LO?

    Thanks

    This.

    Fixed that for you.

And OP: regarding other functions of your vehicle, such as the locking differential, please read the manual thoroughly lest you break something expensive.

Go find a hill so steep it scares you to look at it... Then THAT is where you use LOW RANGE 4WD! If you have the Off Road TRD, 1009 or newer... Push the A-TRAC button (next to the cig. lighter) for Automatic locker action on all 4 wheels! If older model, pust the Rear Differential Locker button.

See the 2010 Mision Santa Maria trip (link below) pics for low range use, in Baja!

It's even more fun to do it in a diesel.

Thing is just a goddamn monster.
