Long Travel BS Thread

    That's based on certified CAT scales, the truck weights in around 6800#

    The first problem is DCLB (all the weights used for springs are based on the short body) so I'm down on cargo capacity to start with, then add armor for north east rocks(1/4" plate), then RTT, Camping Gear, Recovery gear, water, RTT, two spares, etc. I can do it, but not easily, and I'm still right at the top of the weight class.

    I'm also building to move camp every night, so it's not like I can unload a bunch of gear at camp then go hit the trails fast, and come back to camp.

    TL;DR version: why compromise when you have a welder?

    Did you go to longer shocks as well? Or just bypasses?

    Also curious if you had to change any of the upper/lower mounts on the axle of cage when you went sua vs. you’re previous soa setup?

    Agreed, just doing a raw write up I would say he would be lucky if he broke 1000# excess of stock weight, but I’m sure if you tube everything enough you might be able to break that threshold. Keep in mind @snowsk8air2aready has a similar set up in terms of weight with just an add a leaf, but I think he only has one spare.

    I’m nowhere near that kind of weight. Rear bumper 250, spare 100, bed cage 50ish, and day another 100 or so in playing and tube work so my extra rear weight is probably around 500 for daily driving.
    I can see him being around 1300 with dual spares for extra weight over the bed. Got to remember front bumper, skids, roof rack and what not won’t really have much effect on rear spring weights.

    Still running 16s, lower mounts will change completely. Upper may stay the same but I think I may need to renenforce it or redo it not sure if it’s strong enough for the extra abuse that it’s going to take

    That’s what I was thinking too.
    Wonder if that’s a short course link design limit or just all they felt it needs

    The first one is the truck empty except for one box of light gear. The second is loaded for camping, minus the tools and recovery gear, which went in another truck on that trip. Estimated weight for tools+recovery gear is 350#

    ETA: not trying to be a dick, I'd love to be wrong about this some how and use a more normal leaf pack...

    Hey I’m about to throw on a camburg 3.5 kit and have a question about spring rate. I was wondering what I spring rate I should run. The kings I bought have 16x600 on them right now but my friend suggested I should run a stiffer spring just wondering what everyone else is running thanks

    Not a dick at all. I’m just trying to be helpful and make sure you weren’t forgetting something or thinking abokt something the wrong way. If your local place does custom springs then have them hook you up. And hopefully in the event that something isn’t right or you don’t like the ride down the road, they can re-arch them or adjust the pack for you without having to buy a whole new pack. But hopefully everything is right on the first go

    Holy smokes we've been over and over why the short course idea is just a bad idea if you want to maximize travel ( and bed space too ) I just sketched this up to show it in super simple terms how much travel you loose with a short course set up. Obviously not Taco specific dims but the basic math is obvious. Same exact link and CO, same bump at frame but simply move the CO to the link and you nearly double the travel.

    Somewhere between 600-700 is the range most people run. Just depends how much added weight you have up front.

    Wouldn't this be application specific though? I see what you're saying in regards to travel, but the motion ratio is WAY different between the two models. Spring rates, valving, ect would be completely different due to the leverage factor.

    It would, but this guy has asked every question 2-3 times and gotten good answers every time. His truck has been in multiple fab shops because they either screwed something up, or he burned bridges. He took it away from the west coast which has more than enough qualified shops and took it back east to have a shop that specializes in rock bouncers try to finish and completely change his desert truck build. And no one has seen an updated pic of the truck in 1.5yrs. I think @Evenflow is just annoyed he popped in asking a question that he has gotten the answer for several times and seems to expect it to be different now.

    Yes sir, you are correct the leverage ratio is different in every possible scenario where any of the dimensions are changed but the primary factors are the length of the link and the distance from the front of the link to the CO.
