10-35 MPH rumble strip vibration revisited

My neighbor has a lifted truck same way mine is on 5100s. He has ome springs and it's vibrations are more than when it was stock. He had a shop who does transmission work and driveshafts. They said his was out of balance and re balanced it. Vibrations are gone. The shop has now balanced 2 more Tacomas and the driveshafts were out of balance. Hope this helps.

 

I already had my rear axle replaced at 5,000. They have to send a field tech since I’ve had a case with them, so now I’m without my truck. They can’t even give me a loaner. Fucking bullshit.

 

I have a 2018 and still working through this issue. Finally had enough and filed a lemon law claim. Dealership didn’t help. Calling Toyota didn’t help. Too much money to live with it.

 

Ok. So I brought it in today since they finally had a loaner for me. The guy called to ask if I do any heavy towing (in relation to my rear brake issue), I said no. More to come On that.

He said that for the rumble strip they are ordering a part but he hasn’t been told what and he will call me before 6......

To summarize:

1) Rear axle replaced at 5,000. No resolution

2) Rear drums replaced at 9,500. Shudder from Rear went away for about 2,000 miles. Shudder returned when braking, annoying vibration between 15-25 mph when slowing down even worse.

3) 15,500 miles, dealer confirmed something with the vibration and a field tech is currently looking into my braking issue...again. They are looking into a consistent thud from the rear after coming to a stop, as well.

 

Update...the service advisor said they are replacing springs to address the vibration at low speeds. Does this sound correct?

The new drums they put on are also out of spec, which is absurd. I requested that the Field Tech call me because none of this is making any sense to me and I’ve been given inadequate information.

Going to start thinking about Lemon Law but unfortunately in my state the repair attempts threshold is 4 repair attempts, not 3.

I'm going through the process now. I filed a lemon-law case and Toyota denied it. Now I have an arbitration hearing set for Apr. 3 with the NCDS and Toyota Field Tech who worked on my truck. The Toyota FTS claimed all the issues I have had is a result of driver habit and that I must be warping the rear drums somehow. I baby the shit out of my truck, never towed, and don't subject it to heavy payloads. I asked the dealer service manager how I could possibly warp 4 sets of rear drums in less than 25k miles, and he said he didn't know. I don't think I could warp those drums if someone had a gun to my head. I am concerned with some other component failing due to the Toyota Techs tearing into my truck 5x, and something not being put back together correctly based on human error.

 

2019 TRD Sport 4WD DCLB. I'm experiencing the same vibration on decel between 25-15mph, exacerbated by brake application but still there even without brakes applied. About 1000 miles on the truck now. As luck would have it, the male portion of the rear seat belts sits up against the plastic interior c-pillar cover and it rattles in unison with the vibration. Disappointing and irritating. Dealer will be looking into this next week. Better let them see it before I put tires and wheels on it or I know what'll happen.

Something else I experience that I have never seen discussed in any thread is a high frequency, buzzing like vibration that you can feel in the steering wheel and gas pedal when accelerating through the 1800-2200RPM range. Comes on at 1800 under load and goes away after 2200. Annoying as hell to me. Unless you are really laying into the throttle the truck likes to shift gears at about 2000rpm so under certain conditions it's buzzing through the shaky zone almost constantly until you reach desired speed and the load goes to almost nothing.

It feels to me like something driveline related (engine, exhaust, trans, etc.) is touching the body somewhere or just isn't insulated enough from the body. Took it in, tech verified it, drove a couple others that did the same thing and chalked it up to "it must be designed that way." Not surprising. But not good enough for me.

And before anyone calls me a nitpicker and out of touch let me just say I'm a 54 year old man who was a dealer tech (domestic) and service advisor for over ten years, has owned over 30 vehicles running from cheap econo boxes to high performance luxury cars, and has been in an automotive related industry for the past twenty years so I have driven literally THOUSANDS of different vehicles in my lifetime. I have a huge frame of reference to be able to decide what is and isn't NORMAL. What this truck is doing isn't normal by any stretch. Do they all do it? Maybe. Maybe not. Are some of us capable of sensing things that others aren't? Absolutely. But I'm very interested in figuring out solutions to the tough problems and I will be following up on these anomalies to see if I can get to the bottom of them. I'll keep you posted.

These obviously aren't isolated situations, the fact that Toyota isn't stepping up and taking care of their customers is wrong.

 

I’m on my second 19 Tacoma in one month. And after the first one, I test drove three others at two different dealerships. They all have those problems. I wanted to go with a different midsize truck but Nissans suck, Chevy Colorados and GMC Canyons suck, the new Ford Rangers suck, Jeeps have big problems and the big reliable trucks like the F150 were out of my price range, so I got another Tacoma that (to this point) doesn’t vibrates as bad as my first 19 between 15-25 mph. It’s all a shame.

 

Indeed it is. "You tow anything?" First off, even if I did, the truck shouldn't get fucked up -- it's supposed to tow things. Secondly, they are clearly trying to imply that we are the cause of these issues. How on earth can I have a rear axle replaced, a new set of drums, and still have the same issues with a shuddering rear when the brakes are applied, and a constant vibration when slowing down? Obviously, something else is causing it. I'm glad I opened a case because I'm not stopping now. Very fed up.

 

For now...I just have the 20-30 mph vibrations. But nothing constant. That part “is not normal” to everything else.

 

I had rumble on my 2009 under different circumstances than all of you. It was at low speed with light throttle. I could either lift, or go stronger and it would go away. Once I had the tranny fluid replaced there were no more issues. Toyota also recommended replacing the transmission mount, which I haven't gotten to yet. The only problem I have now is a down shift clunk after a quick stop. Before I realized what it is, I thought I'd been rear ended a few times because of the lurch.

 

I have down shift clunk as well, always feels like I get hit from behind.

 

It certainly does. I'm going to get the transmission mount and the carrier bearing replaced and see if that resolves the issue. This is a more recent symptom, but I do have hella miles on my truck.

 

I received a call from Toyota just now. The rep took down all my information and the history of my vehicle. Next step she’s going to reach out to the Field Tech to get the scoop. Will keep y’all updated.

 

UPDATE:

Toyota Rep called me and said my dealer will be updating me today:

-TSB 0171-16 has been performed on my truck for the driveline vibration. Just looking at the PDF now.

-New shoes ordered

-New drums ordered. They had to order TWO sets of drums before they were in spec. If you count my original and replacement drums, that’s FOUR sets of drums. Absurd. I still think something is fucking the drum up.

I await the call from my dealer. I can’t say I’m actually confident the driveline vibration will have gone away. Was starting to like my 2019 Camry loaner...
