DIY prinsu style shell rack

I can’t find where CBI sells the mounting feet, do you have a link?

 

This is a great idea. I have had the Prinsudesign front rack and never bothered to search for a "better" design. I am going to try this soon. Thanks for sharing.

 

Looks like they don't anymore. I bought mine used off another member, but they did offer them on their site at one point. Looks like they sell feet for tent mounting that may work for the rack as well.

Both mounts are just under 2in tall and can be adjusted in all three axes. Height can also be tweaked, either with the use of washers, spacers, extrusions or with v2 - internal bracket configuration.

 

Mounts are looking good.

 

Got mine bolted up today. Need to adjust the mounting feet but wanted to get it thrown up. Going to mount grab handles and scene lights then I’ll pull it apart and paint or powder.

 

What length are you guys buying for a DCLB camper shell, with 60" tracks?

 

That looks great! What size is the bar stock and hardware to mount to the tracks?

 

Why not just make the center a solid block of aluminum? Drill and tap 4 sides and essentially you made yourself a diy version of a U-Joint. If you need to make it taller or shorter just drill and tap more holes off center.

V2 is very close to a U-joint, but has height adjustability "built-in" (I'll let @Barnburner mount it "open" and show you a picture)

V1 is quite different to a U-joint and allows a beefy 2x1 as extension, so you could put 18" extension for a bed rack

 

I used 66" length

 

You can see we've done something very similar to what you've described with the prototype on my truck right now.


However, this setup only allows us to correct for pitch and roll. This is great if your tracks are perfectly parallel - but we're designing these mounts to be truly universal and able to be installed on vehicle roofs as well. Looking at our roofs, the drip channels where these will mount actually curve away from each other and will require modulation in all three axes.

Its 1-1/4" aluminum square on top. The top is 2" wide and the bottom is 4" wide. There is a small 1/8" thick piece of aluminum strap in the track with the 1/4-20 stainless carriage bolts that are 1" long hammered into the strap. Doing it this way you have to grind down the heads heads of the bolts to accommodate the clearance. Ill probably swap that hardware for the factory slip in thule nuts and run bolts down like this route

I have been picking up various parts for the past couple of months. I have a few different needs than most, but the general concept should be the same.

I just ordered Nut for Thule Tracker II Half Foot. This should allow me to drop the part in from the top, and should be just as secure (I am currently using Thule racks, and this is what they use).

@BeachBoy, you wouldn't happen to be willing to share the stl file from this post? I need to make my rack to be ~29" long to fit between my thule racks, and I need it to sit lower as well. I am going to probably use a router to do the shaping, since I only need to make 1 set, and have no intention of mass producing them.

I am debating on cading up my own, but I am only slightly proficient with OpenScad. I have a 3D printer that is sitting idle at the moment, and having a form I can use with my router would be great.

I understand why most people want a full length rack for their tucks, but I want a much smaller one, that will still allow the thule rack to do it's job, and supplement a platform between the two bars.
