Best rear brake drums and shoes for Tacoma...

So Toyota seems to have problems with their brake drums warping prematurely. So what are the best aftermarket brake drums and shoes that ya'll have had through experience?

 

Yours is the first I have read about since I joined a few years ago. Most drums are lasting 70K+ from what I've read. Do you tow a lot?

 

I do not. My first 2019 SR5 had warped drums in the rear and most vibration threads I've read talk about warped drum problems on new ones all the time. But I figured since they are cheap on sites like CAID.com, I get some really good ones and shoes.

 

Understood. Even if you read one hundred threads on bad drums remember there are close to a million 3rd gen tacomas now. It's all about scale.

I just had the drums replaced on my truck last week on warranty.

 

I don't know of any "high performance" drums or of any drums that could potentially withstand heat a little better but one option would be to have a very light machining pass done on a new drum to true everything up then, do a cryogenic treatment to help strengthen the steel. Just my .02 but I'm interested in hearing what has worked for others because I can feel a light vibration coming the rear brakes on my truck after 14k miles.

 

OEM lasting 100k+ miles seems pretty damn good to me.

Warped isn’t common, I’d replace with OEM and forget it.

 

Drill cooling/venting holes in them for efficiency

 

I had a very similar problem with my 2nd gen. Turns out the tire shop was overtorquing the lugs distorting the drums.

 

Mine were replaced under warranty and the vibration came back right after the shoes wore in. I bought aftermarkets and had the same issue. There's something else going on other than just warped drums.
I ended up reinstalling the oems and then backed my adjusters off a little bit. The vibration is much better. I've heard of others saying that the dealer said their brakes were adjusted "too tight". I have a theory that the rear brakes cause the drive shaft angle to change just enough to cause driveline vibration... but who knows...

 

Brake drums don't warp. But even if they did, wear items like brakes are not warranty items.

So if it was 'warped', it's on you. But its a manuf. flaw, thus the warranty applies.

The warranty replaced drums are actually out of round; made wrong by the supplier.

 

I'd like to hear more about cryogenic treatment to strengthen cast iron

 

On some 3rd gens the axle flange is warped, causing run-out. Even if the drum was concentric, if it's mounting to something warped, it'll be out of round too.

 

Much better vibrations as in less?

 

I had a rear drum replaced in the first 10k, but it was due to over torquing not a faulty part

 

Mine happen between 20-30 mph and sometimes without the brakes, like acceleration or coasting. Other speeds the braking seems fine and smooth.

 

From my experience, when it comes to drum brakes, go OEM for the drum, pads and hardware. The biggest problems I have had in about the 8 or so drum brake jobs I have done in my life, have always been with aftermarket drum parts.
