My understanding per the original seller is that the wiring is different. I may be wrong.

Is this possible in a base truck without current camera? If I bought head unit or mirror + cameras?

Head unit might already have video input and chasssis might be prewired(my '14 base model was). Look underneath at the frame behind the bumper on the passenger side, there should be a plug. If it's there you can pick up a rear view camera, harness, and mount plate from camerasource.com. Install is plug/play after you unscrew the tailgate skin(there's a YouTube video on it)If your truck isn't prewired you'll need to fish all the way to the head unit and buy the kit with longer wires. If your head unit isn't video ready you're SOL until you get one that is.

Do you still have the cables for a 2014 Tacoma? I want to install the switch under the HVAC in the center console...

I think you have a different harness than the one JJ used to sell so that info might be in a different thread.
Mine connects behind the head unit instead. Maybe a diode betwen the red#1 splice and the factory harmess clip? Your switch feeds 12V to the splice but maybe it should only be allowed to go one way.

I have this version. I was sent a second when I thought the first was broken. I think all I did was reverse the connection due to the diodes. Sorry if that isn't a lot of help but it was a while ago.

i have the version that goes behind the glove box with a splice. i got it from this thread. i think i do need a diode though or check the supplied Y at least to verify which way it is
thanks. i was figuring it was diode related somehow. ill take a look at it more. thats the trans ecu isnt it where the red wire is connected to the plug? im guessing the diode needs to be on that side so it doesnt get fed 12v with the switch

Yeah, I either read the direction wrong or they are backwards. Either way it works great once you figure out the correct order. Really happy I received this version before he stopped making them.

yeah i like the mod a lot since im able to keep an eye on my trailer straps. my short 4x8 trailer isnt visible at all in my mirrors.

im guessing the diode just isnt working/there. the voltage either needs to go into the computer or "out" from it. it would make more sense that it goes out and the computer supplies it normally. ill see what happens when i get home

well i just have a bad diode apparently and the y harness was labeled wrong. i took it apart and found which lead the switch needs to supply power to the rev camera. so voltage does come from the ecu and the switch now
