The way I see it, Mr. F250 doesn't need a big dick because he already is one.

The independent mechanic that my parents and I have been using for years pushes nitrogen every time tires are discussed at his shop. He convinced my dad to put nitrogen in the tires of his 2013 Honda Pilot Touring 4WD a couple years ago. The Pilot was replaced with a 2018 GMC Yukon SLT 4x4 this past December, and my dad has no plans of converting to nitrogen. Why?

His brother, who has been in the hubcap, wheel, and tire business for like forty years, told him that it was "snake oil". Basically, the only environment/scenario where nitrogen in the tires would make a difference is the racetrack, and the worst any of our vehicles will see is 75-90 MPH on the highway, depending on the speed limit. The bottom line is that this is all about, well, the bottom line...

My friend Pete is a former Volvo mechanic who now has his own shop (Called "The Fix") and services all makes and models. He is able to keep costs down because his rent is low and he employs nobody else, and as a result, his prices are often as much as half the price of what a dealer or even other mechanics charge. For example, the aforementioned mechanic that my parents and I have been using for years wanted like $185 for a differential fluid flush/change on my Taco. Pete only charged $90.31 if I remember correctly...

    That's half the price!

Anyway, Pete and I were talking while he was changing my diff fluid. I asked him about nitrogen, mentioned my uncle's "snake oil" comment, and he agreed. Pete does not put nitrogen in tires, nor does he recommend doing so or believe it has any added benefit over conventional air. My biggest concern with nitrogen is that if I had a slow leak or needed to top off my tires for any reason, it would be bad to top them off with air in the event of an emergency. Apparently, it is okay to mix air with nitrogen, but I still don't want to pay extra for it...

What do the people of TW think?

My truck came with Nitrogen when I bought it. The first time the I needed to add more air to the tires I just put regular air in them. Had read up on this and like others have said include OP there's no benefit by going with Nitrogen.

Air is primarily made up of two elements, nitrogen and oxygen. Nitrogen makes up 78.05% of air and oxygen another 20.95%. The remaining less than 1% is primarily argon, but carbon dioxide, neon, helium, methane and krypton are also present in air.

It’s a huge rip off that many people don’t know.
