I’d love a manual transmission in my 4Runner but the MT wasn’t enough to get me to look at the Tacoma. Unfortunately when I got to look at a Tacoma in the future I’m going to be looking at 1st and 2nd gens unless they do something about that 3.5L.

^^^ Repeated ad nauseam by people who have never spent enough time in a new Tacoma, but those who know, know. 3.5L is a great power plant. I don’t wish my truck had a different engine, especially when everyone else is dipping into their Jerry cans and I still have a third of a tank. For sure, fellas who live close to gas stations might want to dump copious fuel into an inefficient motor, but where I go....thank you Toyota for the 3.5L.

3.5 is a great motor but the factory gearing in the 3rd gen does not compliment the power train

I spent 2 1/2 days with one in 2016 and was thouroughly unimpressed with it. My 4R has a 23 gal tank and I consistently average 325-350 miles a tank before filling up. The fact that someone had to develop a tune for the 3.5 tells me enough, more so when I see /OVTune in threads.

I REALLY hate to agree with you on this... but I do agree. The 3.5 leaves alot to be desired. I liked the 4.0 MUCH more.

I do wish the 4R came with a 6 Speed manual though.

I think you’re missing out. There are tunes for every significant car. We live in a different world now where the internet “hive mind” can endlessly dissect and improve anything. The 3G Tacoma is incredibly popular, selling 100’s of thousands of vehicles a year, and the tuning market for it is probably less than a thousand trucks. It’s just a numbers game. If guys could have tuned their 4-bangers in the 80’s, they would have, and complained about it to.

Step up to a Tacoma some day!

A Tacoma is definitely not a step up from a 5th gen runner

I miss my 2000 3.4 Liter, MT 5 Speed 4Runner. Great and versatile truck. Gave it to my son for his first vehicle.

 that might be enough time to decide it wasnt for you or didn't like it. Not anywhere near enough time to think you can paint a comprehensive picture. You read to much TW and had an impression before even trying I'd almost guarantee.

I haven't spent much time in 4 Runners, but I have had my Taco for over a year. But with all the 4 Runners I have tinted and pulled in and out of our shop I can immediately tell it is more comfortable to me. The adjustable seat in the 4R is way better than the Taco. Now, I did install spacers in the rear of my seat in the Taco and that made a world of difference. So now I will say comfortability would only be slightly better in 4R. The Softex leather in the 4R is more comfortable than the cloth in the Taco. again, this is simply my opinion.

now, the one thing I LOVE about the 4R? it looks absolutely bad ass with a small lift and the right wheels/tires combo. I like my Taco the way I have it, but when I see a 4R on the road I always do a double take if it has nice wheels/tires. I do the same with Tacomas too, but since I own one they aren't that much different than mine. In my area, I probably see way more Tacomas than 4Rs. but I tint more 4Rs than I do Tacos, go figure.

Nope, not enough time at all to get an understanding about it...

What am I looking for in that thread? I'm 4 pages in all I've read is about combat medic sucking chest wounds. Not sure what Tacoma you tested maybe you can elaborate as I'm not searching through 26 pages to find what you're trying to confirm with your linked thread. Maybe you didn't have these mods at the time but here is your personal Vehicle Modifications: OME, 285 KO2’s, Fridge, Compressor, Rack, Lights, Switches. Yeah your 4runner is going to shit on a stock Tacoma. Or was it stock?
